How big of an issue will me being black be in regards to getting into a non-national panhellenic sorority? I have a 4.0, involved in many local volunteer events,I also do dance, cheer, debate, band, student council (president), key club, skills USA, NHS, and HOSA.
I'm also from New Jersey.

What are my chances?

We don't have any non-national Panhellenic sororities on campus. All of our sororities are national. (No locals). We also have the Devine 9 Pan-Hellenic sororities on campus as well.

Being black will not limit your options, but being from New Jersey might. A handful of our sororities draw primarily from Mississippi and other southern states. Nothing wrong with northern states, but with no sisters in the houses being from up north, it's hard to field the girls and get to know then prior to rush.

With your credentials, you will have many options with both councils.

Race shouldn't really be a big issue as most sororities are open to diversity.

She meant non-NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) -- AKA, DST, SGRho, and ZPhiB.

Being black won't hurt you. Being from New Jersey will.

Is there anyway to get around it? I'm the first generation to be born in Jersey. Both sides are from Southern states: North Carolina and Louisiana.

Here's the deal. As actives, our job over the summer is to get to know pnm's coming from out hometowns. When rush starts, we already know the girls from home, we have already scoped them out, and we have a good idea of whether or not they will fit in our house. These are the girls we will concentrate on. States like Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, etc are all well represented in our sororities. If there is nobody from your hometown already in our house, there will be nobody looking at you over the summer and getting to know you. Your application and résumé will likely end up in a pile for "other states". You may get cut even before anyone knows how awesome you are. This happen every year to great girls. It's why we stress networking!

Did you get all your recs? Did any of them come from ole miss alumni? Do you know anyone who can introduce you around? All these things are important!

That being said, there are several houses who pride themselves by taking girls from northern, and other non southern states. One of these houses will be sure to love you if you are a good fit for their house.

Good luck!

How do I get a recommendation?

Are you for real? Pretty much every Panhellenic sorority will drop you after first round if you don't have at least one recommendation. Most girls obtain between 4 to 6 recommendation letters and/or letters of support.

These are obtained by locating women who were alumni of each chapter and asking them to write you a recommendation. Kind of an old fashion letter of introduction. Most pnm have already obtained these letters and have already sent them to the different chapters along with their resumes. If you haven't even started, you are way behind.

I can't speak for all sororities, but our national policy is that we can't extend a bid without at least one.

No one can tell you how to obtain them or where to look. That's where your networking skills will come in handy.

Welcome to the south!

I don't start until fall of 2015, which is why I wanted to nip this in the bud. Thank God for this website, because I didn't know about any of that.

What do I say? Do I just tell them who I am and what I'm requesting?

And does the person have to be from the same chapter?

This seems like major spam post especially considering the fact they participate in cheer band and dance at the same time

I'm in high school, not college. It's a lot easier to do than you seem to think.

I only did cheered during basketball season, dance was through my school, so not an everyday thing. Band is only for Pep rallies, game, award ceremonies, and graduations. On top of all of that, I work.

I've always knew that I wanted to go to college and join a sorority from a young age, so when I knew that they were looking for an involved ladies, I made the extra strive to do more. There's time when I don't get in until 8-9pm trying to fit everything in. It's a good thing that I like doing it or I'd probably quit.
