Rush Truths Sophomore Edition

by:

Hey guys, I’m the one who made the sophomore post that this website decided to take down😆 My best advice for you girls wanting to rush as a sophomore/transfer is don’t do it unless you have very very strong connections or don’t care about the brutal cuts you will go through. “Top” houses on campus will cut you on the first cut and even some middle-bottom tier. Legacy or not. Any time it is brought up in conversation that you are a sophomore the whole vibe of the conversation will change and the girls will become less interested in you. All across the board this was an awful experience as a sophomore and I would not recommend it to anyone. This is not just me speaking from my experience I met other sophomore’s who are going through the same thing. Ole Miss has no quota for a specific number of sophomore’s initiated into each chapter so ultimately they want to take all the freshman to try to get the max amount of money possible out of the people. I understand that and am not saying it’s okay but I do understand from the financial side. Just don’t waste your time or your money on the rush process girls. The advice I have been given is to sign up for COB and try to go into a sorority that way through a more chill process. Resumes/Legacy/What all you were voted onto and a part of in high school doesn’t matter when you aren’t a freshman!!

Let me try again. As a transfer you are better going through fall recruitment. 1) you make friends through recruitment 2) you will actually have to work less to bond with your pledge class as it is harder with spring recruitment etc. As all the effort really is on you. 3) The houses you had left are likely to be the same ones that will have spring recruitment. 4) I gave you multiple examples of non-freshman getting into houses. They just were not the ones they thought perhaps they wanted initially. 5) strongly suggest you get involved in other campus activities so your less lonely. Sorry you dropped out of the process and hope you find your friend group

Good advice. All that said, PNMs need to ask these questions prior to registering. A lot of campus Panhellenics DO NOT have an ‘upperclassman quota’. Meaning, there’s no protection for you to pledge being an upperclassman/transfer. Whereas schools with an upperclassman quota REQUIRE the houses to take a certain percentage of upperclassmen/transfers, to make it fair, especially to transfers.

Wrong. No house can be REQUIRED to take anyone. That is strictly against NPC rules. Just because there's a separate quota to help sophomores doesn't mean any house has to offer bids to them. It just makes it so the sophs don't have to compete for spots with freshmen.

before your former post was deleted I gave you examples of two transfers handling the recruitment in two different ways. They ended up in the same house. One of them wasted a lot of time thinking she should have better options. As she felt entitled as a transfer to get into her best friends house and legacy house. So she did not get to bond as well with her pledge class. Get involved at Ole Miss. good advice and I would not go around playing a victim it will not serve you well. As you will find non-freshman do get in houses. COB is not always likely and does not usually yield more options. Hope it all works out for you. Plenty of non sorority people happy at Ole Miss

If whomever commenting on this thread reads NPC rules, they’ll see that college panhellenics must vote on upperclassmen quota allowance before recruitment starts. If a college tends to usually have a lot of upperclassmen go through recruitment, that’s when it tends to benefit. Or, if the college tends to have a lot of upperclassmen for whatever reason not receive bids. Regardless, it’s a vote by the campus Panhellenic. The Panhellenic can opt to do upperclassmen quota some years and not others. If approved and put into action, each chapter would be required to take a certain percentage of upperclassmen depending on the #s going through recruitment. Kind of like a quota addition. For a chapter to opt out, it would then have to be approved at the local and national level of that sorority. Hope that makes sense.

If you went through at your former school and didn’t get a bid expecting one here is wild.

I did not. Nothing I said even alluded to that. I came from a junior college.

The chapters here are too big. That is why there is no sophomore quota, it would add more to the memberships. We need more chapters. We have ONE new chapter now.

Other SEC schools do have non freshman spaces reserved but trust me it does not make it easier.

At my time at Ole Miss, I remember one rush we took a sophomore. The girl had a lot of connections in our chapter. We also gave a bid in the winter to a Sophomore who had a lot of connections in the chapter, too. They were great additions to our chapter. One never went through rush and the other was a community college transfer. There is hope out there for sophomores! Connections are key!!

I rushed as a transfer (out of state) with minimal connections and got back 6 houses. I had good grades, a good resume, and I was pretty. It wasn’t hard or very different most of the time they had no idea I was a sophomore. There’s no need to scare girls it is a very great way to make friends.

Completely agree and not trying to scare anyone. Just trying to set expectations and the reality that it can be tougher to pledge as an upperclassman, depending on the school. At the end of the day, these chapters are giant corporations, so sadly it's a lot about the bottom line.

If you went to juco because you needed to distance yourself from your high school gpa or reputation before going through rush those things didn’t change no one forgot them.

If you went to juco bc of money you need to really consider if you can afford dues and all the extras.

If you went to juco to play a sport make sure you say that bc it could lead to a COB.

If you reach out to AXO aphi adpi they will have spots and they need upperclassmen bc they lose a lot of upperclassmen and overlook gpa

It was actually a chronic illness that sprung about second semester of my Senior year:( I had planned to attend Ole Miss and rush in Fall 2023. I wasn’t able to come until this year and did explain it to some girls who asked why I chose Juco first, which I then explained to them I didn’t really choose it life just kinda chose it for me! But everything happens for a reason and I was out here at this time for a reason!
