Well, there's free speech protected under the First Amendment that guarantees you to be able to say and do certain things without getting arrested, even if they are rude things. He didn't get arrested. That's called free speech.
But then there's stupid free speech, that will get you fired, kicked out, cancelled, and change the course of your life if you are a member or employee of a private organization that doesn't like or agree with what you did or said. The First Amendment doesn't apply to private organizations. They will make sure you are free of them.
There was so much stupidity and ignorance on both sides. Most students didn't actually know what they are protesting either way.
