Preference round
by: TJMy daughter got back DDD and Chi O for preference round. She loved both sororities but felt she could see herself in DDD more, so she ranked them as #1. On bid day, she got Chi O. She was excited but somewhat disappointed, too. She had a DDD active text her & ask where she was on bid day because several girls thought she was in DDD. During the bid day process, an active who welcomed her home to Chi O alluded to the fact that she was in their top 10 girls. This is my first daughter to go to a school with this level of competitiveness. While, we are all super thrilled at her Chi O bid, I am curious as to the process. Could she have really just been ranked out of quota for DDD? Could another sorority take her , if they ranked her very high but she ranked them as 2. Again, I’m not complaining, just trying to understand the process for my other 2 daughters who will be in college soon.

The selection process/ranking is different and secretive to every sorority. I agree with the other poster, she just wasn't high enough on the DDD list or she would have been there if that was her first choice. BUT she did get a very good sorority, so you should be happy and not worrying about it on GR. Your other daughter(s) will have an advantage as their sister is in XO.

Your daughter was not within DDD's quota. Even though some members ranked her highly and really wanted he, it is a chapter decision and those members should have checked their new member list on bid day before making an assumption and texting your daughter.
The bid matching algorithm starts at the top of a sorority's ranked list and tries to match with the pnm's who put them at #1. If your daughter had been high enough on DDD's bid list to match with them before they reached quota she would have received a bid from them. She wasn't, so the algorithm then tried to match her with her #2. She was high enough on their list to match with them before they reached quota, so she got the bid from XO.
As you can see, bid matching is when a pnm's ranks carry real weight. XO did not steal her because they ranked her higher than DDD, she just did not match with DDD before they filled up.
