Second Choice Bid Day

by: Confused

Apparently some sororities (I’ve heard KD and Kappa and supposedly DG?) had so many girls say yes on Pref that they didn’t have room on their lists so literally over 100 girls ended up at their second choice purely bc of #s… how does this happen and is this even true?? I thought if you told a sorority you wanted to be there on Pref it was pretty much guaranteed???

If you maximize your options and attend both of your pref functions, you are guaranteed a bid at ONE of those houses, not necessarily your first choice. I believe every effort is made to get girls to their first choice, but it is not always possible.

(If you have just one pref option and attend, you are guaranteed that house.)

Houses can only take so many people, so if a lot of people love a certain house, some of them will not get them.

So if a girl has one house left but she’s ranked low on the bid list, is she added as a quota addition?

If she didn't match before that house got to quota then yes, she will be a quota addition. Anyone with one house left at pref gets a good night's sleep before bid day!

This is absolutely not true. Each sorority has a number they must release each round, including for pref. They can actually release more than that if they wish, but not any less. The RFM process uses historical data of return rates and applies percentages to each round to give the numbers that work for every house. Everyone invited to pref is on that bid list somewhere, so a sorority NEVER invites someone to their pref they wouldn't want, because anyone attending could end up as a sister. And no one has any idea how many girls got their second choices except panhellenic and they don't release that info, and houses have no idea how the pnm's rank them at any round. Anything you hear about pnm's getting their second choice is people making things up.

True, but some girls will tell you they got their second choice so you know it happens some. Panhellenic also has a percentage of girls who match with their first house after pref and I think it’s always in 90s% but it’s not 100%.

What you are saying doesn’t make sense… there was a historical high # of PNMs going through recruitment this year, so houses asked more girls back to pref than they previously did based on return rates. Houses know more or less what girls are ranking based on if they say they are “conflicted” or “found their house elsewhere” or if they say they want to be at that house on bid day. When 200+ girls say they want to be at that house on but day, the house cannot put all of those girls on their bid list and therefore more or less accurately know that the girls who don’t make it on their list are going to their second house…. Unless they don’t make it on the list for either of their top two house then it’s a numbers game as to which house they get out of the two.

IDK what you mean "don't make it on their list." You obviously don't understand. Everyone at a sorority's pref is on their bid list somewhere, and ranked. Everyone. Ranked. Pnm's ranked lower have a smaller chance of matching with a house but they are on that list. And the "numbers game" you refer to that takes place after bid matching and quotas are reached also takes those houses' ranks of a pnm into consideration when placing her as a quota addition, along with the pnm's ranks of the houses, and the relative sizes of the chapters.

@Yeah, yes girls do their second choice. My point is not that this doesn't happen, but that people try to find reasons to claim that there was some glitch in the system to cause it. Shock, disappointment, denial...and so the rumors go around.

We should go back to letting girls fall through at pref so the OPs daughter could be sitting in her room crying that she didn’t get a bid at all.

What’s your daughters name? I’m guessing you are one of the jackson girls moms that fell through.

It’s a numbers game and if you weren’t ranked high enough on their list you will go to the house that values you more. Be happy you got that bc the house you think you wanted didn’t want you/rank you high enough to matter. In the end you’re going to the house that actually values you more.

Yes, many girls end up at their second choice if that house ranked the PNM the highest and see a place for her in their sisterhood. With over or about 400 sisters in each sorority, there is every opportunity to find women you connect with.

come on MS moms get over it. Your daughter was NOT high enough on her first choice list, but her second choice wanted her. Give it a chance.
