does gpa matter a lot during rush?

by:

My mother has told me that GPA is the first thing looked at during rush. I don't have fabulous grades (I'm a B- student), so obviously this stresses me out a little bit. I can't tell if my mom is lying to me to get me to try harder in school or if this is true. However although my GPA is low I got a 30 on the ACT... will this be looked at as well?

I am a sophomore transfer student, and want to rush next semester, however I have a 2.5 GPA. I am very likable and am confident in my looks and personality. I have had impressive summer internships and a good resume. Will sororities be understanding that I am adjusting to a new school and that next semester I will have better grades? Or will they immediately be turned off before meeting me? Thanks for your responses!

I am sorry, but with a 2.5, you are not going to get a bid. There is simply no discussion. ALL of the Ole Miss sororities have minimums way above this. Some even have a higher GPA requirement mandated by their Nationals. It won't matter if the girls meet you & love you. They will NOT be able to give you a bid.

Pledge the library & find other activities to participate in. I am sure this upsets you and I am so sorry. I would rather be honest and save you from getting your hopes up and suffering disappointment by going through rush.

I rushed in 2013 and barely had a 3.0 with a 31 ACT. I was invited back to both houses that are known to really care about grades. There was no way I was on either of these houses "pre rush lists" because I only knew a few girls at ole miss and zero alumni. All of my rec letters women who didn't graduate from ole miss. I just had great conversations in both houses and that was enough to push me through to the next round. I pledged one of these "grade strict" houses and absolutely love it! As long as you have above a 3.0, you'll be fine!

and your great ACT score & GPA doesn't have a damned thing to do with the question asked!! Did you bother to READ her situation? Transferring sophomore with a 2.5 GPA. Why did you even bring up your situation? She does not have a 3.0.

Bless her heart, you know that she will not get a single invitation by the second round, no matter how nice & social she is.

What about 2.98 ? Good resume , lots of community service and extra curricular.

First off, you went all the way to 2014 to find this post. Things have changed in just the last two years.

You don't know about other sororities, so I'll just stick to mine and assume it also holds true for a few others.

In my sorority, our nationals have historically left us alone and allowed our chapter to self manage itself. With the increase in social media, pledge class size, national scandals occurring throughout the Greek community, etc, nationals have stepped in recently to lay a heavier hand on us than they have in the past. As a result, our standards and grades have risen to meet their demands. The way we approach rush, the social events we have, our expected over all gpa's and how we conduct ourselves whole representing our sororities are all examples of issues nationals are demanding we change.

I understand that it is not only my sorority, but several on campus that nationals are starting to step in and mandate gpa minimums.

All this within just the last year or so.

3.2 seems to be the new norm. With below a 3.0, your resume will not help you, nor with just casual connections. You are going to need massive connections to go to bat for you.
