rush

by: curious

This is for any girls who rushed (within the past few years, including this year) who were from out of state. How difficult was rush? If your are a pretty, southern girl with very good grades and community involvement, can you compete with in-state girls? I know by previous posts and greekchat that almost all the girls at Ole Miss who rush can claim the same credentials. I know you are lucky to receive any bid, but it would be nice to know you can potentially pledge DDD, XO, or KD. I will admit I wasn't/am not super popular at my school, but I can definitely get good recommendation letters for each house. I know a few girls in several sororities, but not exceptionally well. Is there hope that "top" sororities will seriously consider you? Like I said before, I get all sororities are great here, but not being able to compete with in-state girls makes me scared to attend ole miss.

I'm from oos (TN), and I pref'd KD, Phi Mu, and AOPi, but I chose Phi Mu as my top choice! They fit my personality and personal values and what not better. But as long as you have recs, a good resume, can hold a conversation, and are generally pretty then you shouldn't have too hard a time!

...TN is considered same as in-State...especially Memphis... OOS rushees from deep south region are considered on par with MS... so unless you're from mid-atlantic, north-east, mid-west or west... you wouldn't REALLY know what its like...would you...

The recs are needed and you need above a 3.0. What matters the most is you being able to carry on good conversations and the girls wanting you. Recs help but the truth be told the recs dont do the voting. You need to have girls in the chapters wanting you. All the groups are good dont be fooled to think only 3 are worth being in. There are plenty of stories to tell why you wouldnt want to be in any sorority. We all have our time to shine and not to shine. Come to Ole Miss because you love the school and what it has to offer not just a sorority. If you come for just the sorority chances are you will be disappointed. Ole Miss is great and so is oxford. Keep your mind open and dont be so rigid.

It doesn't matter where you are from, if you weren't one of THE girls from your school, you won't get top tier. That's the kind of girls there. And truly, you wouldn't fit there if you weren't.

PS, not that there aren't THE girls in other houses.

I am from Memphis and have a 3.7 GPA, but no I am deff not one of THE girls at my school, but on the other hand "the" girls at my school are really only liked within their own group & do things I personally wouldn't want to be a part of, so if a sorority is looking for "those" girls, I doubt I would want to be there. I love Oxford, but my parents are worried for me about rushing because they know it is really important to me and don't want me to be disappointed. I am not going exclusively for greek life, because I am going to pursue my education, but it honestly is a major factor

You should find a home as long as you keep an open mind about the process!

You absolutely can get into those three. I am not from the south, have ZERO personal connections at Ole Miss, and I preffed DDD. chose not to list them first on my bid card, but I was told that if I had, I would have gotten a bid.

You will need too get both letters of recommendation which is 1-2 RIF's and at least 2 letters of support. These do carry a lot of weight especially if you can get them from someone who attended Ole Miss or Mississippi State or just someone who lives or is from Mississippi. These people will have more connections (if they really like you and their cousin's daughter is a DDD at Ole Miss they will tell them too look out for you). You must get these letters done early on around the time you graduate high school they should be sent in. These letters are very important because the majority of top tier sororities at Ole Miss use a system where the panhellenic council evaluates the girls and then gives the members around 300 girls to actually consider and if you are not in that group then theres little to no chance you will be in that sorority. If you have a good resume and at least a 3.0 and letters of recommendation you will be within this group. Another thing you will need to do is try to meet older girls. If the older girls you meet like you then they will try their best to have you be in their sorority. Before rush you must also be careful, this includes no shacking ESPECIALLY AT FRAT HOUSES, and getting too drunk at the bars infront of sorority girls. If one girl in a sorority sees you doing something like this and doesn't want you in their sorority I guarantee you won't be. Just don't drink too much or at all before rush because you never know what could happen. Good luck!

How are we supposed to find people to write these letters? My mother wasn't in a sorority and her friends weren't either.

Most cities across America have Panhellenic associations. Google yours. They can help you find recs. Also ask teachers, friends moms, moms you baby sit for, ladies at your church, hairdressers, co-workers, older girls who have already graduated and moved to college..... Trust me, you can find recs! Ask around to find any ladies in your hometown who may have attended ole miss. Their recs are golden.

I am from out of state and pref'd tri delt, KD, and chi O so it is DEFINITELY possible. I wasn't prom queen and only had a 3.1 GPA. However, I was president of my class in high school. Having one big thing like that stands out on a résumé and makes girls want to look at you. If you don't have something unique like this, take advantage of the last 6 months of high school and find things to fluff up your résumé to make you seem interesting. Also, GO TO SPRING PARTIES (and don't act like a fool). I'd basically already made it to pref round for DDD and xo before I had even graduated from high school because I made so many connections at spring parties and I hardly knew anyone going into those.
