As long as you have a high enough GPA and have solid conversations there will be a house for you. Connections are not necessary.

being out of state and not having connections will definitely limit your options just because of certain houses do rush, but you will still find a house you love as long as you have a good attitude about the process!

It is very competitive, probably the most competitive recruitment in the country. However, if you have above a 3.0 (the higher the better!), know how to small talk and don't have a bad reputation you will be just fine. Yes, being OOS with no connections can make the process harder, but it can help you also but providing you a clean slate. I was OOS, no connections (but still had at least 1 recommendation per sorority) and knew ZERO people at Ole Miss but I still got a bid from a house full of girls who had connections/were a legacy. My advice to you would be to be very friendly during your orientation and try to meet other freshman girls. Chances are they will know actives and will introduce you, and thus you will make a connection.

Here is a short example of how knowing actives can hurt you. There was this girl in my rush group who raved about knowing actives in all of the houses (she was a Jackson girl who knew everyone from High School). She kept telling me that her friends made sure that she was high on all of the lists so that she would definitely get into a good house. Well by the end of rush, she was dropped by every single house because she had a terrible reputation back home and all of the actives made sure to tell their sororities about her. She ended up not getting a bid anywhere because of her connections and people knew her. This is why I say to embrace no one knowing you and make a great first impression.
