oss freshman who already messed up this site!

by: s.cook

I'm oss and attending this fall. I'll admit that I am more than a little overwhelmed. I know that I want to rush and was told not to say anything about being a legacy. Is that true? I already posted this but I guess it was under another discussion. Sorry, obviously, I have a lot to learn!

I think it might be better to not report because then I can tell them (mom and Nini) that it wasn't a good fit or that I wasn't invited back because of me and not them. Sorry, I sound ridiculous, staying locked in is making me crazy!

Definitely make sure your legacy house knows because it could help you, but not the other houses because you don't want them assuming that you're going your legacy and therefore cutting you for that. Legacy chapters should be notified directly by your mom or Nini and some nationals have a form for that. Rec writers to any legacy house need to mention it too. Rec writers for other houses should not mention legacy and you just leave your legacy info off your recruitment form and anything else from panhellenic.

Most sororities have a Legacy Introduction form that your mother and grandmother should fill out and send. Have them fill it out! You may love your legacy house and it could be what gets you on the bid list. Being a legacy does not guarantee you a bid at Ole Miss but it can help. It’s not necessary to make a point to tell the other sororities. Finally, be honest with your mom and grand mom, while they may want you to be in their house sometimes it’s not a fit. I was not a fit for my legacy house and I’m very happy where I am. My mom understood.

Legacy info is on the recruitment registration form not just in the packets you send for recs. It seems like leaving it off is shady.

Lots of girls leave it off.

Please take this advice and report your legacy status. Just because you are a legacy doesn’t mean you will end up at your legacy house. Ole Miss legacies definitely have more pull than non ole miss legacies. If you don’t fit into your legacy house....1) the girls will pick up on it ans you will not be high on their radar and 2) you can rank it low. Also, if you make it back to your legacy house during later rounds (after philanthropy, before that is a bit premature) then you can subtly voice your opinion about wanting to join a different house to the sorority you wish to join. Every year during rush we have girls that are legacies elsewhere join our chapter and have some of our legacies join others. If you are a legacy from another school i wouldn’t worry about reporting your legacy status and you may end up enjoying your legacy house during rush!

Also please please do not go telling girls in the dorms that you are a legacy somewhere. It could get back to other houses and they may think that you are 100% going to your legacy house and it will hurt your chances.
