frat rush process
by: Trying to understandCan somone honestly explain how frat rush works to me? Step by step? Does a guy go to all of the houses during Round 1 and then begin ranking and the frats begin cutting after that like the sororities do? Is is mutual selection? Do frats have a "quota"? Are bids given out only on Bid Day or can a guy get a bid earlier? From a mom that is very familiar with sorority recruitment at Ole Miss, but doesn't have a clue about fraternity recruitment.

Fraternity rush at Ole Miss has 3 rounds. In Round 1 (2 days), every potential new member (PNM) goes to every fraternity house in a rotation as part of a static group of about 65 PNMs. Each house visit lasts 30 minutes. After Round 1, the fraternities do cuts.
Before Round 2, PNMs will see what fraternities invited them back for Round 2 and select up to 6 of those houses to visit in Round 2. Round 2 visits last 50 minutes. After Round 2, the fraternities do cuts again.
Before Round 3, PNMs will see what fraternities invited them back for Round 3 and select up to 3 of those houses to visit in Round 3. Round 3 visits last 60 minutes. Immediately after Round 3, fraternities do final cuts and PNMs rank up to 3 fraternity choices (or fewer if they visited less than 3 houses in Round 3). Bid day is the day after Round 3.
Fraternities do not have a quota. Bids cannot be given out before Bid Day but can be given out after Bid Day.
Hope that helps.

It's mutual selection but only the PNMs do a ranking. On the fraternity side, the fraternity either extends a bid to each PNM after Round 3 or not (no ranking of PNMs). If the PNM's first choice extends him a bid, then that's it. If there is no bid from his first choice, it moves to his second choice and then his third choice if necessary.
As far as bids prior to bid day, it is against the rules to extend bids or to even tell a PNM that he has a definite bid prior to Bid Day. Regardless of the rules, unofficial bids are sometimes offered but the PNM still can't join the fraternity extending the "bid" until Bid Day or after. Also, just because a fraternity member tells a PNM that he has a bid doesn't always mean that the PNM will receive an actual bid on Bid Day. Generally I would be suspicious of a fraternity throwing around unofficial bids prior to Bid Day.
