sorority vs fraternity rush
by: ConfusedWhy is sorority rush so different from fraternity rush? I know it’s because of Panhellenic rules, but was it ever similar? Were girls ever allowed to receive bids from several houses or did they always only get the one bid to take or leave? The “mutual selection” is of course bull crap anyway but was it ever a little more mutual where girls could have more exposure to more houses?

It used to be that sororities didn't have to make their cuts until right before pref, so they would carry tons of pnm's that they were never going to bid just to make their parties look bigger and be able to say that their house was highly desired. Meanwhile pnm's had to cut houses and would eliminate sororities where they had a real chance and were actually wanted. So when it was time for the pref invitations there were enormous cuts and those girls that had been lead on by sororities that always intended to cut them found themselves with no houses at all. It was bad then. Ruch is so much better now because pnm's know earlier rather than later where they are truly wanted by the sororities being forced to make the cuts they always intended to.

A huge difference between fraternity and sorority rush is this... fraternities give out lots and lots of bids to whoever they choose, with no external (IFC) limits placed on the number of bids. AFTER getting that bid, the pledges face frequent cuts. They have to earn their initiation and prove their worth as a brother. Getting that bid is no guarantee that you will be a member of the fraternity. They can be black balled at any point prior to initiation.
It is completely the opposite with sororities. Once a girl gets a bid, we intend for her to become an initiated member. There is NO hell week, there is no "earning" initiation. So while it may be harder to get a sorority bid, it is much harder to get through to initiation for the men.
Yes, some fraternities have all but eliminated pledge periods to try to stop the hazing prior to initiation. That initiation after only a couple of days has its own problems.

Thanks for responding! I think NPC recruitment needs a massive overhaul. While what you describe sounds less than ideal I think what is currently offered is also less ideal. I don’t know where the balance is though. I do feel that a lot of houses miss out on a lot of women that could be incredible assets, and many women are quick to decline a house that they would most likely feel at home in, because of the way the recruitment process works. Not only at Ole Miss but all schools. The houses women only see in the first round could very well be for them but because they only have 20 or so minutes of exposure outside of social media and what they’ve heard from others on both sides of the equation, I think so much potential is lost.
