the g/olden days

What was recruitment like back in the 80s and 90s? Was it as competitive as it is now? Did connections matter as much? Did you have things like work week? What was bid day like?

Just curious. I figure some if the moms and alums could answer.

early 90's here- and I'll agree with what everyone else above has said and add that here were a LOT less OOS students (I was one) and we all ended up usually pledging the same couple of house(s)- Because there was no internet / social media / rank sites- there wasn't so much "Top Tier" vs. "lower tier" but rather in-state and out-of state houses. Don't get me wrong there was still a lot of gossip and bad-mouthing "XYZ house sucks" "you dont want to be a PDQ"- but honestly I feel like you went where you felt the most comfortable rather than the "brand name". I preffed one upper, and two middle / lowers. I got my first choice which was a middle lower because most of the girls were out of state like me and I felt at home. I can honestly say if I were going through today I probably would have ranked them differently and put the top tier one first because of all the BS posted and then been disappointed when I "ended up" in a middle / lower.

ALSO SO TRUE on the skits- I cut a house because their skit was SO BAD it made me hurt. It was / is a GREAT HOUSE but I sometimes wonder how many girls they lost out on because their skit was so bad.

Play along with me. I was from oos back when rushees cut sororities. Cut adpi zta aopi after 1st round. Then cut dg phi mu next - for whatever reason those two were considered "local" sororities if you were from oos. Kd was also considered local, but skits I attended were ddd-wild west, xo-choo-choo, kd-wizard of oz, theta-walt disney, kappa-don't remember, pi phi-don't remember. This was early 80's. Anybody remember kappa and pi phi theme from that era??

Was Kappa a beach theme? I cut them before skit party, but my roommate went to them and I seem to recall that (yes, I have a steel-trap memory). I too went to Pi Phi for skit but like you, I can't remember the theme. DDD, KD and XO's skits really stood out. KD's whole decor with the Wizard of Oz was over the top amazing.

I occasionally see comments from people saying they 'cut' a certain sorority. It makes sense now, it's the old ladies talking.

Not necessarily, many top PNMs will actually cut houses if they receive a full schedule back. I do think some PNMs misunderstand how the process works though.

Actually it's Mommies who don't know how the process works. PNMs are given the option to 'choose' who they want to return to, but anyone who has gone through the process in at least the past three years knows that list means nothing. Sororities you want to keep will taken off your list and sororities you dropped will be back on the list. It is absolutely the choice of the sorority who they choose, not the PNM. PNMs do not have the option to 'cut' any sorority, it may appear that way to the Jackson Jackals but it's no longer the reality.

@No is only talking about the top PNM's who everyone wants. They actually do cut houses because none of the sororities cut them. It's okay that you were not a top PNM and can't comprehend that.

No Mom, even the top do the cuts - not the PNM. Sorry, things have changed from the 30 years ago when you were here. Even if you were able to make sure your daughter was 'selected' for your sorority - it was still the sorority's choice - not hers.

Don't be so hard on the Mommies. Their memory isn't what it use to be and it's probably hard to keep up with all the changes, especially when their IQ is a few points south of normal.

You can call it whatever you want, but if a PNM is asked back to every house for the next round, and her bottom however many have dropped off her schedule, she cut them. It’s not a “mommie” thing, it’s how recruitment works in the year of our lord 2019.

And Folks this is who is on GR. All these posts ranking and bashing our sororities are from old ladies who love GR! They're going to be ranking and posting until they're six foot under, so just keep that in mind when you are reading all the rankings and bashing and posting about our amazing sororities here at Ole Miss - it's just old ladies who can't move on from 20, 30, 40 years ago.

You seriously have to wonder about the mental health of this many old ladies trolling a site that is designed to rank and bash college sororities, and they are loving every moment they can spend ranking and bashing. The biggest bullies aren't currently in college, they're these mean old biddies with no life and apparently no future.

Nah, these are accurate. Yeah your mom is posting here but she’s just ranking them like what her daughter tells her.

Ranks happen. Maybe Greek life isn't for you, honey. Heck, sounds like neither is reality. You should go back to your mommie.

Yes, thank you @nah! These SNOWFLAKES don't understand how important these ranks are! This is right up there with destroying the Ozone and the Rain Forest! This is our legacy and they need to learn to quit whining! WE WANT TO RANK - it's how we feel good about ourselves!
