You go to college to have a future! You can absolutely have a social life without being in a sorority.
In my search for a roommate, none of the girls I interviewed were in a sorority.
Don’t let this site scare you off.
You’ll love it here either way

college is what you make it, greek or non greek

the only difference between a “greek” social life and non greek is social events which are almost always during a weekday. girls - you can still get into frat parties. guys - you can still get into bars and get invited to date parties. really doesn’t matter, it’s just hyped up

Greeklife really hasn't affect my social life one way or the other. I have as many non Greek friends as I do Greek, and most of my Greek friends aren't even in my sorority. If I had it to do over I probably would have saved myself a lot of money and skip the whole Greek experience. That's just me though.

I see the problem... these out of state kids that are thought of as behavior problems back home or who didn’t make high enough ACT scores to get into Texas or Texas A&M are left. They are wealthy and have money to burn so Ole Miss takes them in snd brags openly about their out of state students. They really are the left overs from other states. Once here, these kids cause all kinds of problems. I think it’s finally caught up with ole miss. We really need to be more selective in our out of state choices.

The lowest ACTs is other states would still be higher than the highest ACTs from Mississippi, so Ole Miss needs OOS so it doesn't look like a special needs college.

In response to "Just the Facts," I don't think ACT scores - or the appearance of low/high ones- is what determines the number of oos students. It's the tuition costs. I was excited to come here and it wasn't because om is a hard school to get into. I think safety and community are being lost because of lax admission standards in return for higher oos tuition payments. Not meaning to argue with you. I just wish things were happier and safer here.

I’m an OOS mom and know many OOS students that attend OM because of the agreement with the community college there—if they maintain a 2.0 GPA (I believe it may be for one semester) then they are guaranteed admission to OM—regardless of any other OM admission requirements! This, and the cheaper OOS tuition fees, opened the floodgates for many OOS applicants!

Readers: This is an example of the attitude of in-state alumni against OOS student with very high ACT scores, SAT scores and so-so grades because they took an advanced course load.

Please try to understand the meaning of those attitudes: the lack of respect for OOS is downright dangerous.

actually I'm from out of state and came here not because I'm a "leftover" but because I got a full ride. and most of my friends are also not from Mississippi because I can't even understand half the words coming through those thick country accents. and I'm from the south, so that says a lot.

Look at the baby rebs insta bc they’re all OOS. But you can’t be too picky anymore bc if it weren’t for the flock of OOS students the entire Greek system will fail.
The reputation of the guys here needs to change ASAP

What a bunch of drama queens on this thread. These boys did made a terrible personal choice and that is that. There will be ramifications for them the rest of their lives. They can’t be suspended or kicked out of school for this, period. If they could, so would a whole lot of others for their social media posts. The sky is not falling. My gosh many of you need a blankie and a pacifier.

Um, actually the guy who almost strangled the girl to death actually DID get kicked out/suspended from ole miss and can't set foot on that campus for life. This is probably the first consequence he's ever had to face in his life, along with his short stint in the penitentiary.

Not all the greek guys are like that. Go check out the rankings the mommas post - the "top tier" are who the mommas have worked 18 years to get their boys into and are fiercely competitive - from little league to rush. No wonder those guys are jerks - trust me they don't treat their mommas any better than their dates - the nicest guys are the middle/lower tier and gdis that aren't all about impressing everyone imo.
Totally agree about OOS though ole miss has completely sold out for the money

Some OOS Are here for the scholarships - which other schools outside of MS also give to high achieving MS students. Some are full pay and others receive merit scholarships. Carefully analyzed statistical facts would show Ole Miss had an excellent long term strategic plan to attract a higher caliber student to the university and the old stereotypes die hard. We are here for the football nor the Greek life. Shocker, rite?

Let us leave the Ole Miss community proudlyas we were to join it.

Clarification/Correction: We aren't here for the football nor Greek life. They are a welcomed bonus though.

Let us love Ole Miss too.
