age restriction?

by: Anonymous

Hi there. I was hoping I could get an honest answer on if there is an age restriction to rushing. I am 26, married and starting my freshman year. Will my age and being married prevent me from joining a sorority?

Yes, they will prevent it. I am so very sorry, but you are not being realistic in the least. There is no age restriction to sign up for rush, but you would be cut from all houses after the first round. My sorority, like a lot of NPC sororities, prohibits offering bids to married women. So that's a hard no right there. The social obligations and time commitment of sorority membership do not align with being married. That aside, your age alone makes you a no-go. A college sorority is not the right age group for a 26 year old. New member classes are comprised of mostly 18 year olds fresh out of high school and the senior class is 21-22; 26 is even older than some alumnae from four years ago. Also, sorority expenses are around $5000 a year. TLDR; not the right fit.

Agree with Honest. And to the original OP: you will have nothing in common with your pledge class or sisters...you may like some things, but do you really want to be doing pledge activities, going to mandated things? Pledges are on their own for the first time and that's a totally different experience than someone your age.

And I can't imagine an 18-22 year old being able to connect with someone older, much less married. A lot of getting to know your sisters is through activities and spending time together, it doesn't just happen because you wear the same letters.

You should focus on your schooling and your marriage. I mean this to be helpful, not harsh, since you asked for honest feedback. Good luck with your schooling!
