rush process explained

by: PNM

Can someone PLEASE explain the entire rush process.
How does variable quota actually work?

How does Panhellenic determine the number of girls that each chapter can invite to party or pledge?

What is retention rate?

What constitutes dirty rushing and breaking rush rules?

Thanks so much!!

@Yo is right; relax. Explaining all of that would take a damn manifesto and wouldn't make a lick of sense to anyone who hasn't personally gone through recruitment already. You don't NEED to know. None of it pertains to a PNM (or her worried mom), only the Actives. If you are going through recruitment this fall, all you need to know is to get your recs, keep your social media clean, be open-minded to all our great houses, and bring your best looks and attitude and conversation each day to recruitment.

Rush Process Explained, right there.

Don't worry about the panhel/sorority side of it all. You can't control that. One thing that is good to note is that you never actually "drop" a sorority. Houses that you ranked low may end up on your schedule the next day as long as there is room for them. Some houses you want will release you. This opens your schedule for houses that you ranked lower. Go in knowing this, and try not to let it upset you.

Your ranking is only considered in 2 circumstances - if more houses would invite you back than the max number for that round (so your lowest ones would then drop off your schedule), and after pref if both houses offer you a bid. 1st round 11 houses max, 2nd round 8 houses max, 3rd round 5 houses max, pref round 2 houses max.

You rank all houses where you attend parties and don't actually "stop ranking" a house until that house has dropped off your schedule entirely.

Just a note, a PNMs rankings are also taken into consideration if one of the houses they didn’t rank doesn’t invite them back next round but both the ones she does rank do. In that case the RFM system would put the house she ranks first back on her schedule. Obviously if she didn’t get asked back to her first ranked house either, then it would automatically move on to see if her second ranked house invited her back.

It is important for PNMs to know how this sort of stuff works so they don’t get upset when a house they “cut” is on their schedule day after day, but again these are questions that should be directed towards their RCs, not an anonymous website where anyone can post anything.

Sorry, but your words made zero sense. "if one of the houses they didn’t rank doesn’t invite them back next round but both the ones she does rank do. In that case the RFM system would put the house she ranks first back on her schedule. Obviously if she didn’t get asked back to her first ranked house either, then it would automatically move on to see if her second ranked house invited her back." What does that even mean? I'm an active with a good handle on the process and I can't even tell what scenario you are talking about.

I'll try:
The houses do the choosing. If a house decides not to invite you back to the next round then it doesn't matter how high you ranked them, you are not getting an invitation. In fact, the houses have NO IDEA how you rank them, how about that? So that is not what your rankings are used for. Your ranking of the houses is used to ensure your schedule is as full as possible to replace the houses that release you. Note that this is WHEN houses release you, not IF houses release you. You WILL be released from houses you really like and ranked high. So, how do your rankings come into play? Well, suppose for second round, when you go from 11 houses to no more than 8, you think that the houses you ranked 9, 10 and 11 will drop off your schedule. But the next day you find that the houses that you ranked 1, 2, 3, and 4 dropped you. Well that is a shock, and you are upset, but there is good news! The houses you ranked 5-11 all want you back! So it turns out that there is room on your schedule for your lower ranked houses after all, so you get to go back to seven houses. It's not a full round of eight, but it gives you the most options you can have for that round at houses that WANT you! Yay! Moving on to the next round, you can have five houses on your schedule, so you rank the seven you went to today. You get your schedule back and one of your top 5 dropped you, and your number 7 house came off your schedule, leaving you with five houses. Yay again! Moving on to pref, you have ranked your five houses and the next day you get invitations from two houses who can see you as a sister and want to put you on their bid lists! Guess what? They are not your top 2, but that's okay because you ranked five and you got two back and you are going to prefs and ranking both and getting a bid at Ole Miss! YAAAAAAYYYY!

And another thing:
The OP questions? These are the WRONG questions for a PNM to be asking!
You should be asking how to maximize your options through the ranking process,
what the MRABA card means to you,
why you shouldn't SIP,
and what are your likely choices if you drop out of recruitment or decline a bid.
THESE are the things every PNM needs to understand because these are the things that apply directly to each PNM.

Let's provide a more visual example:
Patty PNM went to 11 houses today and can go back to a total of 8 houses tomorrow. She ranks like this:
The houses she definitely wants to go back to are houses A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H.
She would rather not go back to houses I, J, and K. She ranks them:
1. I
2. J
3. K

But let's say house B doesn't invite Patty back the next round. The RFM system will try to fill her schedule to a total of 8 houses, so it looks to see if any of the 3 she ranked invited her back. If house J and K both invited her back, it takes HER RANKINGS INTO CONSIDERATION and puts J on her schedule, because she ranked J above K.

This is the sort of thing a PNM should understand when going into recruitment, because having been a recruitment counselor before, I've had PNMs throw fits and cry when they don't understand why house K keeps popping back up on their schedule night after night even though they "cut them."

If she doesn't want to go back to I, J, K, then she ranks them 9, 10, 11, not 1, 2, 3 for crying out loud. If you're going to do a visual at least get it right. OMG

Y’all seem v upset by what I thought was an easy to understand example. Peggy PNM or w/e would prefer to go back to chapter I over chapter J and chapter J over chapter K so if she has space in her schedule and all three ask her back they’ll match her with her number 1 choice to go back to. At some schools they also don’t rank in order of preference every single chapter, only ones the PNM wants to drop (i.e. first alternate, etc). Both versions just show the PNM that you rank the chapter higher the more you want to go back to it, regardless of terminology. If I were a freshman I would understand that explanation. If you don’t that’s fine but offer your own explanation then instead of getting mad? Like this is literally not worth getting that upset over these people are clearly trying to help you need to calm way tf down

@Yo and Stop, it's nasty remarks like yours that give rush and the Greek system a bad reputation.

Why is it so bad that a PNM would like to understand the 'system'? Yes, the PNMs can't control it and I don't think that's what the OP is trying to do, but it helps some people to understand what's going on around them to alleviate stress and gain confidence and understanding.

Truth is, I don't think information like this is readily available because no one wants to be accountable. It would seem as if sororities like to have hide behind a shroud of secrecy. I know more than 2/3 of my house doesn't understand one bit of the selection process :/

Knowledge is power and those who refuse or don't want to disseminate it are usually ignorant and/or scared.

I thought it was good advice. PNM's shouldn't sweat the details so hard. Just take care of pre-rush requirements and keep your nose clean for now, the process will be explained fully during recruitment. What's wrong with that?

I see both sides of this discussion; where it might alleviate some stress of the unknown and it may be too complicated to understand without any prior experience. Wouldn't hurt to just put it out there and let people decide for themselves. Maybe it would also stop a lot of the back biting before, during, or after rush and houses wouldn't spend so much time trying to defend themselves or tearing other houses up.

Well said and I agree.

I do think it's really important for PNM's to understand that they don't do the choosing (unless they're the very rare PNM that everyone wants) - it hopefully will help them understand why a house they ranked "lower" keeps showing up and why houses they ranked tops fell off. I know many girls who come into rush thinking they get to pick, that they're in control, then they're really upset when they discover it's not that way. It's been made worse by variable quota since that makes it all the more competitive.
