being out of state hurt me getting into a fraterni

by: JoshL

I'm thinking about attending ole miss in 2018 as a freshman and was wondering if coming from the north would change my chances of getting in a fraternity and if so how many would not consider me because I'm from out of state? I was also wondering if freshman would be able to live in the fraternity house as a freshman or would they have to wait?

yes being north will hurt you.
do you have alumni here? i'm guessing no. which would be the biggest hit.
do you have really close friends here? if no, than you've taken another shot on the foot. by close friends i mean actual friends, not randoms you like on insta.

live in the frat house as a freshman? lol. bro you won't even live in the frat house as a sophomore. these houses are big, but only for juniors/seniors, not everyone.

bottom line, you'll more than likely get into a frat. def wouldn't be top tier. if you work hard on letters, connections, possibly middle tier.

some honest advice, if you aren't from the south and don't have connection, i'd avoid this place. it's not very welcoming. and greek life is a big deal.

I wouldn't listen to the post above this at all! It isn't true (especially about guys needing recommendation letters LOL). I am a girl from New York and got into a southern house at Ole Miss but I know a lot about fraternity rush and can tell you that it's all about you fitting in with the guys and not making a fool out of yourself at rush parties.I know a lot of guys from New York and surrounding northern areas that are very happy in their fraternities.

1)Will be northern hurt your chances? Yes and no. Are you going to be a KA? probably not. It's an old southern house and they take jackson boys. You probably don't want to be there anyway, they are very country. But if you fit in with them and they like you then it shouldn't be an issue. I know northern guys in Sigma Nu and that's supposedly an "all southern house".

Go to the rush parties and meet the guys. Don't do anything stupid to try to impress them, they just want to see if you can hangout with them or not and if you're cool. Phi Psi, Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Pi are full of northern guys and they have a great time. You aren't limited to those 3 houses, it's just where a lot of northern guys end up. There are northern guys in other houses, it just depends on where you fit in. Find out where your people are.

2) Sophomores live in the house with exec members. I don't know what the person above me was talking about..

first post is right for the most part

you won't get into a top frat. i do think you'll get in some place and a lot of northern guys are happy with where they land. But, as first post says, you won't get into a top frat and basically those mississippi guys are just going to try to tell you they are better then you lol

i'd stay clear of the area.

if you are from miss and have connection, then yes, i'd recommend the place 10/10.

if you are from the north and don't have connection, stay clear.
