just to be clear

by: PNM

I know Greek tank is a lot of hate but you can read between the lines here... as an out of state girl with no Mississippi connection and I'm not mega wealthy. I have good grades and I think I look thin and pretty. According to this site the highest my expectations should be is DG?

I just want to be clear about that. I don't really care, I just want the truth.... my roommate and I should hope for DG on the high end and be good with whatever we get.

You never know what will happen but I just wouldn't fall in love with really any sorority - a "top" house or not - or get your hopes up because rush is a crazy thing and anything can happen

If you are from out of state with no connections you do have a reduced chance of being recruited by the top Mississippi/Memphis Sororities, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. DG is really going after the ones who don't make those top sororities, so they are the bottom of the Mississippi tier. Phi Mu and Kappa have some Mississippi connections but also some strong out of state connections to certain areas. So if you an out of state with no connections you have a chance with Phi Mu and Kappa but a better chance with Pi Phi and AOPi if you have better grades and a good resume. If grades are an issue you will have better luck with Alpha Phi, ADPi and Theta.

Thanks for the honesty. I guess DG is only if your out of state and a cheerleader or something. It is actually easier to handle rush if I am not worried about those four. My roommate and I are just going to focus on the rest after reading this.

Just go in with an open mind. Enjoy rush, make friends, and take the opportunity to get to know girls from every sorority. This is only opportunity you have to see every house in a short time span.

Oh my roommate and I are going in with an open mind but it's much easier on our stress if we don't fall in love with those four, otherwise I am completely open minded

Yes, as an OOS, no Mississippi connection PNM, your best bet is to concentrate on 8 sororities that aren't "top tier". And bc our Greek program is so strong, that is not a bad thing.
Have an open mind to all houses. There are girls from upper south, FL, GA or North - who don't plan on living in Mississippi after graduation - who prefer middle or lower tier houses.
Meet girls from all houses and give all houses a chance. We can't wait to meet you!

To be clear, those sororities are considered "top tier" to people from Mississippi/Memphis not necessarily everyone else. Make sure you have a rec/RIF for every sorority before rush. You will find an amazing group of people and you will LOVE Ole Miss!!

Great advice here -- and don't get fixated/stuck on ANY sorority, regardless of tier. That's a sure way to go crazy. A few other tips: 1) Pay attention to where you feel most comfortable, not what other people think of that house (ignore the tent talk); 2) Go through ALL of rush - meaning, go to every party you're invited to, go to both pref parties, and most of all, do NOT suicide. If you get a bid, take it and give that house a chance even if you're not sure about it. Odds are you will love it.

Recruitment is crazy and tough but if you go in with an open mind you can find a great home. Wishing you all the best!

Here's the thing- you just never know- rush is absolutely crazy. I was like you OOS, no connections, no mega money, good grades and think I am thin and cute...etc... I pretty much put the top 3 out of my head, fell in love with a "lower tier" on the second day and was crushed when they didn't end up on my pref schedule and beyond shocked when one of the "top 3" did. Honestly think it worked out like this because I was actually myself at that house and I was too worked up / in love with the other one that I came across as anxious and probably a little "weird" because I was so stressed. I ended up pledging the house I put down first which is considered "middle tier" because it was where I felt the most at home after pref. Good Advice above gave great advice. Go in with an open mind, be yourself and try not to get too stressed or fall in love with any house. Yeah this site has a lot of hate on it- but from where I sat going through last year I couldn't tell the difference between the top and the so called bottom- probably because I was OOS. I honestly think sometimes OOS are at an advantage because we don't feel the pressure to pledge a certain house unlike a lot of the in state girls who think their lives will be over if they don't get KD, DDD or Chi-O. Every! I mean every! house on this campus is great and if you go in with an open mind you will find your place- and it might actually shock you where that place really is.

This advice above is some of the best I'seen because whenever you get fixated on something - a house, a job opportunity, really anything - you get into a "weird" state and don't come off as yourself. Follow this person's lead and let go of any expectations. I know a girl - OOS, no connections, from an area where sororities aren't a big deal - who was so laid-back about the whole thing (even to the point of being OK if she didn't get a bid, but still very interested) that she got into a top house. And that wasn't even her intent!

Why would an OOS student want to be in the bottom tier of the Mississippi sororitys? Makes more sense to be with other OOS students.

Dear PNMs, no one knows where you will fit in, you don't even know where you will fit in. Yes DG does go after the Mississippi girls and gets the cuts from KD/DDD/Chi-O but that's their problem. If DG doesn't want to meet you than it's their loss.

How would a house with all MS girls be top tier. Seems like you are drawing from a smaller pool and passing up hot smart OOS girls, whose parents probably have more money than yours, because they are paying expensive OOS tuition and yours scrounged for years just to pay the cheap IS tuition.

Maybe we should not say Top/Lower houses, but more like Local/OOS houses. I dont mean that in either a good or bad way, just an honest factual way.

MS houses have historically been top tier because the mass numbers of OOS students didn't start until about 10-15 years ago...and tiers don't change that fast. Sure, we always had OOS, but they were mostly from other Deep South states.

Personally I like having both in-state and OOS girls in my house and would hope that every house would have some of each, I like knowing girls from everywhere, including Mississippi.

Why do YOU assume that just because girls are IS, their parents must have had to "scrape up" the tuition over years...Many of the IS girls I know, including myself, earned lucrative scholarships, had their choice of colleges in and OOS, and chose Ole Miss because it offered the best education for the money. And even if they didn't get big scholarships, their parents were more than capable of paying for whichever school they chose--anywhere.
BTW, there were many OOS state girls in my pledge class, along with many MS girls. If you are a genuinely good person with great grades and a strong resume, you are just as capable of getting top-tier as anyone.

Coming from out of state I had zero interest in KD, Phi Mu, AOPi because they are nonexistent in my state. Alpha Phi no interest too.

So just because those houses don't mean much in your state, you've already written them off before meeting them? What happens if you fall in love with one of them and they become your favorite house?

Curious to know which houses you are interested in...

Totally agree - all PNMs should give EVERY house a chance!

But if a PNM knows she won't be staying around MS/South after graduation, it's her choice to lean towards the houses that have alumnae chapters in her state.
