honest opinions part 1

by:

I am a senior at Ole Miss and can honestly tell you PNMs out there that there is no bad sorority at Ole Miss. This is a top Greek school and all sororities are great. When going through rush, try to stay positive and open and realize that you will end up at the house that is right for you! Now I would like to give my honest opinions about each house. First, I would like to say that I am in a sorority and do realize that there are issues within my house just like there are in all houses. No sorority is perfect and I am not trying to bash any house on campus or boost my own.

Alpha Delta Pi: PROS: Gorgeous new house. Young chapter that has history on campus. Lots of diversity and fun girls and social events.
CONS: Gets a lot of grade risks and northern girls during rush.

Alpha Omicron Pi: PROS: Lots of sweet, cute girls. Great philanthropy events and takes girls from everywhere. Well liked on campus and good reputation.
CONS: Blends in and and can be easily forgotten.

Alpha Phi: PROS: New house that is currently being built. Very pretty girls that have a lot of fun. Newest sorority on campus so there is room for growth.
CONS: Doesn't have the best reputation so far and has taken a lot of girls who were blacklisted elsewhere.

Chi Omega: PROS: Lots of history on campus and is sought after by legacies. Good reputation and always takes a lot of very smart pretty girls. Had last years Homecoming Queen.
CONS: Often forgotten and not the most active on campus.

Did you really mean to write that the fact that ADPi takes a lot of northern girls is a CON?????? Why would that.be a bad thing??? What is wrong with you southerners that just have to look down on people that are from different regions? Crazy!!!!!

Some Mississippi/Memphis girls have been taught their life's success depends on whether they get a bid to certain houses which are great and have great girls.
But there are also great girls from all over the South, North, Midwest- who chose to come out-of-state to Ole Miss-whose lives don't depend on getting into specific houses. That's why our Greek Life is so strong, we have 11 great houses with great girls in all of them!!

I know it's crazy, but as an active from the north, here's the "logic" behind preferring girls from the south/in-state:
Girls from around the area ("area" meaning relatively near whatever university is in question, or from a big feeder city), will have in-house connections to vouch for their character, so there's less of a gamble with reputations. It's also inferred, although not always the case, that local PNMs are more prepared for rush, because they have family members who were involved in greek life before them.
That brings me to another key point: family. In-state PNMs are more likely to be in-house legacies, which has an added bonus during recruitment.
Finally, if a PNM is from nearby, it's more likely they will STAY nearby (if you're going to go to college in your hometown or two towns over, you're probably not eager to leave home anytime soon), so they will be able to help out with volunteering or donations as an alum, meaning more money for the chapter and more "tradition". Obviously every chapter at Ole Miss has to have a strong alum network to afford to be here, but some have more alums that stick around than others. Does that make them superior? No! But when you're Polly PNM and you're afraid to leave home for the first time and you see all the girls from your church at one house, it can feel a lot more like "home away from home". Take it or leave it, all the houses are great!!!

Being an ignorant moron is a con, too.

Hey, pnms from the north or the west, or out of state-non-southern. When you come to ole miss, just know that there are people here who will be thrilled to meet you. And there are people who will secretly think they are better than you because of geography. Sorry ladies, even if you insist that's not true, guess what? Saying things like - she's really great, but she's from the north - is thinking you are better. Guess which houses tend to think that? The so-called upper tier. The houses that "everybody" wants. The houses run by alumni. The houses that are the 13th grade of high school. The houses that are only southern or oos southern. They will always see you as different. Don't waste your time and energy here because you don't have to. There are long-established chapters that pull girls from all over like theta and aopi that are amazing, have great philanthropy opportunities, and where you will be accepted for you. There are new chapters that have a lot of opportunities for leadership, like Aphi and ADPi, that are amazing. Think you might want to be a sorority president or rush chair one day? I promise you that won't happen in XO! I

And yes, I fully expect somebody to chime in and say "I'm from the north and in a top tier sorority and I love it!" - they are the exception to the membership demographics. And that's a fact.

Hey @ Proud Midwesterner....
Where did you get that statistic that 60% of the student body is from OOS? Also, if that number is accurate I bet you money that those 60% are not Greek. Most of the Greek life here are from Mississippi or are Southerners.

I think as a southern student it's not that northerners are a con but that since I am from the south I don't want to be in a northern dominated house. It's nothing against the people themselves but if I'm going to the university of Mississippi I want to be in a sorority with girls like me. If I wanted the northern experience I would go there.
