california - good or bad?
by: hey
I'm going to ole miss next year, but i am from California.. Will I have a worse chance of getting a bid because I am not from the South or will the sororities like that I am different?
#1by: OOS also
Some of the sororities are 'Mississippi' sororities and they have already chosen their members (although nothing official until recruitment), however there are good ones that are mostly made up of out of state members and you should have a good chance with those if your grades are good. Be sure to get your recommendation letters for ALL the sororities. You will see a lot of blah, blah, blah, talk on this site, but that tends to be those Mississippi girls cat fighting over stupid stuff.

sweetie, no one here is going to like you because you are different. this isn’t an ivy league school where they embrace difference and uniqueness. mississippi has a stereotype, either you fit into it, or you don’t. doesn’t matter if you are from a rich part of california or if you are the prince of england. we are scarred of anyone better than us.
yes 60% of our school is out of state. but 40% of the 60% is from memphis. given memphis is closer to ole miss than the biggest 3 cities in mississippi (jackson, gulfport, biloxi). the other 15% is from close by states (GA, Bama, Louisianna, texas) and really 5% is out of area or if you want to call it, out of state.
you are downgrading yourself by coming here.
There’s a lot of schools in the south that embrace out of staters. Vandy, Florida, FSU, etc has a lot of out of state, even Bama. Not here.
All the california girls I know are in low to mid tier sororitys. And the ones in mid tier are literally like super models.

Be assured the sororities at Ole Miss are welcoming and friendly. Your chances are as good as the next woman's if you go thru recruitment with a very open mind and possess the qualities individual sororities aim for in their new members. Be yourself, have a great time meeting our super sorority women and I hope you are bid come Fall!

it doesn’t matter where you are from. the two things are legacy status and who you know. if you don’t have legacy status, it’s going to be hard to break into the top tier. and if you don’t know people here (i.e. good friends not you following someone on insta) then it won’t count.
a lot of girls don’t have legacy status but went to high schools around here and have a ton of good friends in frats and end up in middle-top frats.
but if you don’t know people here, then i’d avoid the place. you’ll be left with bottom-mid (if your lucky) tier.
from there it just depends on your personality. a lot of far out of staters weren’t popular in high school, so they embrace any new friends, and are really happy here to have a good sisterhood even if it’s low tier. then you have a lot of pretty/rich/stuckup girls from rich areas and were popular in high school and since they don’t know many people here, they end up low-mid tier and just think they are better their sisterhood and end up transferring out
so if you are ok with friends that aren’t popular or rich, than you’ll find a good home
but if you look down on non popular or non rich, then you’ll be out of place

There is one bit of truth in the post above: top-tier houses are 99.9% filled with Mississippi /Memphis, Ole Miss legacy and other super-duper-connected girls. Breaking into the top tier if you're from out of the region/OOS and don't know anyone is tough. With the new quota system, even Ole Miss legacies got cut last year.
The mid-tier houses are largely Mississippi/Deep South girls. Not saying you couldn't get in, but with no connections, it could be hard. Most unconnected, OOS (especially Out-of-Region) girls land in lower tier houses. Don't write them off! Some great girls there and with the new quota system, they can be way more selective than in past years. And, there are exceptions to every rule!
Being from California won't be your challenge - it's being out of the region with no connections. Have an open mind - be interested in every house and you likely will find a home. Be aware of how tough Ole Miss recruitment is so that you're not shell-shocked as I've known some OOS girls to be.
By the way, what brings you to Mississippi all the way from California? Even with a large OOS population (most are from the South), it's a different culture. And I wish you luck.

Good points and the OP should try to get to know as many actives as possible once school starts.
