girls who sell things on facebook/insta
by: HmmmmI've seen a lot of girls who are coming up next year selling products online... Such as Mary Kay, younique, lipsense, wraps or teas, etc. does this weird you out about a PNM if they're selling products on Facebook or insta? Do you think these things will affect them in rush at all?
#3by: Concerned
If someone is selling things online I worry that they may end up dropping from not having the money. I also wonder why they wouldn't just get a part time job where they could make more money. I know so many girls who work at boutiques or restaurants back home and have that steady income to pay for their dues rather than something inconsistent like selling make up
#4by: 🤔
I wouldn't want to take someone who sells this stuff simply because it's tacky to be all over their social media & people get annoyed with it. I also know girls who will literally send direct messages to people, and that would be embarrassing for one of our girls to message random ppl from high school to make a living. I would rather take girls who work on campus & are building their resume. There's an embarrassment with selling things on social media
#6by: But
But you don't really know which girls are direct messaging people.... Also I think it's different if someone is selling art vs selling things for a pyramid scheme. My sorority hasn't said anything about it; personally it just looks bad in my opinion BC you never know if they are directly messaging people
#7by: Dont
#8by: depends
It depends on what it is and how it is done. If it's lip sense it probably won't be a big deal as long as they aren't super annoying especially considering lots of sorority girls sell it themselves. If it's something like weight loss wraps though, thats a little weird. I don't really think any houses have discussed this for rush though because it doesn't matter all that much
#9by: Disagree
I think lipsense is tacky as hell to sell. Those girls do videos on Facebook showing people how to put on lipstick & girls from my hometown try to sell it over snapchat even. I feel like it's just the kind of girls you constantly will roll your eyes over because they're always trying to make money off their friends or followers. I don't think any houses

Good: (1) if you have a greek event for charity and you are promoting it (2) you make your own accessories or furniture or whatever and you have a SEPARATE instagram account and you don't promote it, just tag your necklace for example. to where someone is like wow i love that necklace and clicks on the tag and sees you made it and buys it.
Bad: (1) selling stuff on your main instagram, whether it's your old clothes or selling for a company. no one wants to see a billboard. and you can just list on esty or ebay trust me there's buyers there for it

by: question to "concerned"
Would you not wonder that they might have to drop out if they have a "regular" part-time job if their hours change, etc. and interfere with sorority activities? I know people building these businesses and make more money from it than from a part-time gig if they work it consistently over time. I also know women with demanding jobs/families who have built good incomes with these businesses, done in part-time hours and built over time.
I applaud their industriousness and developing entrepreneurial skills. Great skills to have even if employed by a company post-graduation given how fast the work world is changing.
