gpa and certain houses

If I have a 3.4 GPA and I am out of state does this limit my chance at a good rush?

You should be fine at almost all of the houses. I've heard kappa cuts if you're below a 3.5, but rush is all about knowing people. Rush is super intense now due to the cut quota. GPA is important, but it's even more important to know a people in house.

You should be fine. There are several great sororities that are diverse and are especially appealing to out of state students. Get your recommendation letters to every sorority, and come in with an open mind. As we get closer to recruitment the bashing will become severe on this site - ignore it. Every sorority on the Ole Miss campus has great things to offer it's members.

We are getting there but it takes time to bring on sororities and make sure they are going to be successful. A Phi is still new and there are still some houses that need to be a little stronger. As these houses get more in demand, which they will, Ole Miss will open for even more expansion.

It takes a tremendous amount of money/commitment to bring a new sorority to any campus. OM has a demanding, super competitive Greek system which can make it tough to colonize here. With more girls going through recruitment I think it will be easier in some sense to open a new chapter since it's not ideal for houses to get so huge (Tri Delta and other top houses have about 450 girls).

Other factors:

1) New houses cost millions. Many national sororities will colonize on campuses where there are either no houses (dorms are used) or the cost of a house is dramatically less. For example, the new ADPi house cost $5 million, huge investment since there's no guarantee a new chapter will succeed.
2) Sororities need alums in the area to support a new chapter - tough going if you have few to none to help.
3) AT OM there's the issue of land - luckily for ADPi and Alpha Phi there was open land on Rebel Drive where 4 other sororities have houses. Not sure where future houses could be located, there's nothing I see near current houses. As odd as it sounds, that could play a role in a houses's success since any open land might be on the edges of campus in other areas, so not appealing location-wise, especially if it's a lone house in that area.
4) I don't think they will bring on new houses until they're sure ADPi & Alpha Phi are successful - which could be a few years.

Why aren't there more sororities at Ole Miss? Because the tier system there is vicious and unchanging.

Because after all of the RAH RAH to welcome a new chapter the first year, the existing chapters turn on the new houses like vipers. The back stabbing, gossip and tent talk work to destroy every new house that comes to Ole Miss. "Top tier" sorority members turn on the girls in "lower tier" houses, as if dragging down a newer house makes theirs better. Look at the garbage posted on this site, if you need evidence.

If there was a bit of Panhellenic spirit and support of each other on this campus, the entire Greek system would be stronger. But that is never going to happen, is it?

I get what you're saying - and wonder if there are any campuses - with super-competitive Greek systems, not the laid-back places - where that kind of support actually exists.
