possible midwest transfer (dg)

by: midwest

Ok I could use some real advice, hearing a lot of opinions and viewpoints would help too, but I am currently a freshman and go to a large school in the midwest, though it's a very fun and well known school with good academics, I am very strongly considering transferring to Ole Miss. Firstly bc I would save a whole lot in tuition and secondly bc Ole Miss was my dream school but was too scared bc of the distance (ab 11 hours) so I went with my second choice that was a state away from my home state (ab 3 hours), I still like it here and all but I feel like I'm settling, and would enjoy Ole Miss a lot more, so I guess my question is as a girl from the midwest transferring my soph year, would I feel welcomed or able to fit in? Im just not exactly sure how easy or rough the transition would be, also bc I dont know a single soul that goes there, also Ik greek life is, and I am currently in DG at the school I attend now, so yeah thats also another concern, if I would be welcomed or accepted there? Thats not my main concern but obvi still a concern and how I would make friends and all, but yeah this is all over the place but any and all advice would help, thanks :)

if you are married and you are happy with your husband, but there is a guy that you "think" looks a bit better but know absolutely nothing else about him, do you just file for a divorce and go after this second guy?

don't be stupid. general rule is, you don't transfer unless you absolutely have to.

second, and there isn't a soul that will disagree with me here, Ole Miss is completely and utterly over-rated. If you came here for a football game or a spring party and think that's what it's like here every day, you need a reality check.

There is maybe 1-2 good football games all year, and you don't need to be a student to enjoy any part of that or the spring parties. Most weekends 65% of the students go home, so it's really quite. The bar scene, well there's bars on one side of the square and that's that. Greek live is pretty much a requirement, it's not that people want to do it, it's that they have to or be left out. If you think it's all happy because of smiles on insta, guess again, those girls work hard and spend hours liking each others pics so their pics get liked back (unspoken of agreement) unless you are KD than you buy fake followers.

then you have 25-30% of the school who are loners, barely know anyone or talk to anyone.

do i think you will be one? probably not. maybe you'll have a few friends, but trust me, it's not as advertised

sorry that sounded so Debbie downer

i went to a private school in jackson so i got into a top house. i like the sorority I got into and ole miss. But it's not where near as great as I expected, that's really all I was saying.

if i could re-do it, would I pick this place? probably. like I said I went to a private school in jackson, so Ole Miss works perfectly for me. If I was a out of stater especially from an area not known to have a lot of Ole Miss students, I wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole

pretty much what that person said. keep in mind most circles and sororitys are picked on freshman year, so joining your sophomore year is going to be extremely hard. I'm sure the people during your visit here were friendly, but once you are a student here and circles are already formed, it's like a brick wall.

there are a few exceptions, like if you are on the football team- they don't care about greek life, they are trying to go pro and their teammates are automatic brothers. pre-med in honors college- same trying to go to good med schools, good close group of smart friends. International students form big counties like china - again they form close bonds with each other.

Um I disagree strongly with "well" seems like they are trying to come off as giving genuine advice, when she seems to be wanting to scare all outsiders away, and pretty much say if you aren't from a certain area you'll never make it here....and also you can see it's clearly a KD with that comment they slid in there lol. But no that is not true, yeah it'll be a scary move and you'll definitely be intimidated at first, like who wouldn't be transferring colleges? Takes a brave person, but don't let these things stop you, if you are a genuine cool person, you'll make friends and find your people here, no it might not be right away but you will, and don't let others that feel threated tell you differently!!

First, different sororities have different rules re: afflicting a transfer student - they may have to vote on you joining their chapter. Usually not a problem, but be aware and that most friendships in a house are formed as pledges, so you'll re looking to "break into" existing groups. Not always an issue, though.

Second - the Deep South culture here. More students are coming here from states outside the South, but it's still a fairly traditional school and Greeks dominate student life pretty much. Another example - I know someone from Colorado who was shocked at the "decorator dorm" rooms the Southern girls have - like from a magazine layout (even made national news last fall).

What were your reasons for Ole Miss being your dream school? Was it from watching football games on TV and seeing the Grove tailgating, the pretty campus and quaint town of Oxford? Was it more about academics and your major? If it's from football games and tradition, I wouldn't necessarily pick a school for that. If it's just save to money, I'm sure there are schools closer to home that offer that because you need to consider the costs of flying back and forth, that the sorority costs are high, social life costs, etc.

I guess I should also add my dad was military so I've moved a bunch and enjoyed new places, not that that means Ill want to transfer every year lol just that my experience growing up is something I also thought could help a possible transition, and no definitely not just for the football or tradition, the tuition is significantly lower and when I first applied to colleges my senior year I applied to zero in my home state I've always wanted to venture out and didnt want to give myself a safety net, and I feel like the school I attend now was my saftey net in a way, also Ole Miss does have a big department for my major

I think most out of state students are more adventurous and enjoy the challenge of seeing new places and meeting new people. I am an OOS and I am enjoying my time at Ole Miss. I came here for my major and for the most part I am pleased. I joined a sorority that is almost entirely other OOS students and I love it, and it does help with meeting people. However I am also involved with several others groups that I also enjoy, and my major offers opportunities to participate in group activities. I would definitely check with DG to see how they handle transfer students. Greek life is strong here, but there's also plenty of other opportunities to meet people if you just look for them.

Have you actually visited the school? Met with girls at DG? Met with people in your academic major?

If not, you should - especially since involvement in something at OM is important, Even if DG affiliates you, it might not be a match. And more importantly, you should visit to see how well you like the people in your academic area. You can also get a sense of the Southern culture since you are smack dab in the Deep South, even though we have a lot of OOS students.

And curious - what state are you from that charges more in-state than OM OOS tuition? And how big is your current school?

I come from Texas and the tuition here even with adding OOS student fees is cheaper than my friends at UT and A&M pay...by far! The cost of living is so cheap too, that it makes it so affordable to be in sorority and shop and have a life here. when my parents found out the price difference they were shocked how cheap it is. I wouldn't trade my experience for anything, I highly recommend it!

Agree with a poster above - if you haven't visited and checked everything out, you should. Risky to transfer to a school without doing so.
