rush

by:

Hey, I am super excited to be attending Ole Miss next year, but I am super nervous to rush. I have a 3.7 GPA and a 22 ACT score. Do sororities look at your ACT score like GPA? Also when is it okay to start building connections with older girls next year for rush and what is the best way to do so? I am an out of state girl attending Ole Miss and have zero connections. Can I use alumni from different colleges for recs? Or will that not do much for me? I am not a legacy and am turning to my moms friends that were in sororities for rec letters. Is hard for an OOS girl to get into a middler tier sorority? One of the main reasons I am coming to Ole Miss is for the greek life. I am not sure how all of this stuff works and am curious. Thanks so much!!

Sororities look at the complete package, but your GPA will be one of the first things they look at. It will be fine to have your recommendation letters from out of state alumni, but Ole Miss alumni will carry a little more weight. Come in with an open mind and don't worry about the tiers. The tiers are more of a Mississippi obsession and most of us from out of state don't waste time worrying about them. I ended up in a 'middle' tier and the Sisterhood in my Sorority is wonderful, but I have many friends in Sororities that are considered 'lower' tier and they are having just as much fun and their Sisterhood is strong also. Check the Panhellenic website for information regarding Recruitment and also each Sorority's site for additional information. Good luck!

I agree with Go Greek - there are plenty of spots in mid-tier sororities for OOS girls without connections - but use your time before recruitment to connect as much as you can, that will help.

One other point - you say one of the main reasons you're coming to Ole Miss is for Greek life. I sincerely hope there are bigger reasons than that because recruitment doesn't always work out for everyone and if Greek life is a major draw, then it could be tough if things don't end well. It doesn't always work out for girls, even if it's just a few.
