is this true?

by:

A girl from my school went to Ole Miss last year and then transferred back in-state because she said that everyone at Ole Miss was "range rover driving rich kids" and that even though she's considered upper class here, she was considered poor there. Is it true that most students at Ole Miss have a lot of money. And if you don't, does it really matter?

I heard that also before I came here. I am an out of state student and I come from a upper middle class family. I can't tell much difference at Ole Miss than the larger schools my friends attend. There are rich and poor students and everything in between at every school. I drive an older model car and I don't seem to be any less popular than anyone else, if I decide to go out I usually have a car full of people. I have friends who I am sure have more money than me and I have friends who I am sure have less money than me, but we certainly don't sit around comparing our financial status. Honestly there are some weeks I am so busy I can't even leave campus to spend money if I wanted to.

There are a lot of nice cars and designer clothes but no one will ever make you feel bad about not having it. I'm from a middle class family and took out loans to be here. I didn't bring a car and don't wear Lululemon everything and no one has ever made me feel out of place. Honestly you can't even tell who has money and who doesn't and no one really cares if you do. I have always felt welcome with the people I meet, and I'm in a top-middle sorority. The kids who make you feel bad about not having money are the ones who no one wants to hang out with any way. I promise you will feel so at home and welcome here!! I hope you give it a try!!!

The saying "The only people that talk about money are the ones that don't have any" is especially true at Ole-Miss. If you don't try and brag about what your parents do and things like that you will be fine!!

Think you are trolling a little bit, I don't think anyone would transfer from here just because "everyone" is "range rover driving rich kids".

Ole Miss just seems rich because (1) when sororitys/frats travel in packs (which is always), they aren't going to take the kid's car that drives the Kia, they are going to take the best car, so that's why you see the nice cars on the road (the bad ones are garaged lol) and (2) most of the cars actually aren't nice, they are entry level benz/bmw, which isn't much more than a honda/toyota

"The only people that talk about money are the ones that don't have any" This is so true.

I know people with actually nice cars here: range rovers, benz amgs, bmw m3/m4 and they don't brag about it or even worse post car pics on insta! Like my friend with a range rover if you say nice car, he'll just say thanks and walk away. Trust me he's not going to stand there and tell you "oh yeah, it's the supercharged edition, it's $12,000 more but a little faster, and SUVs aren't sports cars and their not meant to be fast, but my parents have money so like why not"

Only the poor/middle class who go out of their budget to buy semi expensive cars (cheap Mercedes, f150s etc.) brag about it.

The actual rich people with actual rich cars they don't talk about their cars or their parents jobs or any of that, and if you bring it up, they will either ignore you or change the subject

Sorry if you thought i was trolling, i really wasn't lol. That specific girl has always been thought of as one of the richer people in our town and was probably just annoyed by the status change!

I thought your question was a legitimate question because I know I had people tell me the same thing when I decided to attend Ole Miss. So I didn't take your question as trolling. Some people just aren't ready to leave home or get to far from home. I have already heard of some of my former high school classmates leaving their colleges, some aren't going back and some are changing to something closer to home. Those people probably looked for whatever reason they could use. It could be your friend just wasn't ready to move too far from home.

These comments are pretty spot on. Bragging and showing off just screams insecurity and trying too hard. If you are raised in a NICE upper class family you are taught that it is rude to brag and that one of the very worst, tackiest things you can do it talk about your money and possessions. People who weren't raised that way don't know any better and are desperate to show off. Yuck.

I am from the Deep South and my mamma taught me 2 cardinal sins are to be an ungracious hostess (i.e. run out of good food) or talk about money and/or possessions. Many people with flashy "stuff" have credit, not actual money. Read the Millionaire Next Door. Many folks with money drive old, paid for cars and while they may wear nice labels, they may be well worn favorites. True Story: A friend's dad was getting rid of a nice Mercedes. Asked my dad if he was interested. My dad asked, can I haul stuff in it? Can I put my dogs in it? Will it go off road? When I said not recommended he then asked me then why in the heck would I want that car. Just Saying.

there is a good mix and you should be able to find a place where you are comfortable. some have money, some don't.
