oos student coming to ole miss!
by: newbieOkay, so i'm an OOS student coming to Ole Miss from Kentucky, and I have good grades and i'm really social. I'm not really worried about what house I want to join because i'm not a legacy or anything, but what can I do to improve my chances of getting a bid? I never worried about getting one in Kentucky, but will it be harder to get one if i'm an OOS student?

I am an out of state student also. You will want to get letters of recommendations to all the sororities. The 'top' tier sororities are harder for out of state students to get into, you almost have to be a legacy with connections. I didn't even decided to rush until about a month before school started. I was like you, I wasn't concerned about the tiers, they meant nothing to me. I accepted a bid with a mid tier sorority and I am very happy with my Sisterhood. So to answer your question, first make sure you get letters of recommendations to every sorority, and when you get to school start making some connections. Also don't do anything stupid like getting sloppy drunk after you get here.

Great advice. Also, any connections or rec letters you could get from actual Ole Miss alums will carry much more weight over just a letter from anywhere.
It is all about connections and who in that house will fight for you during rush week. Get to know people, rush has already started in Jackson and Memphis for next fall.

Hey. I'm also from OOS and in a mid tier house. Like the others said, make sure you have a rec, or 2, for every sorority and it's a good idea to have an Ole Miss Alum do at least one of those recs. Variable Quota makes things interesting. The houses are told how many girls they have to cut - the top 3 cut 1000 girls after first round, mid tier cut about 800 girls. In other words the houses have to cut so many after Round one, they use any excuse, so maximize your chances by having recs. I didn't have a rec for one mid tier house, and it was the only one I wasn't invited back after First Round. Keep an open mind, meet people, get recs. We have a super strong Greek life, so you really can't go wrong. Rush is stressful, but worth it. Good luck!
