why aphi? (no hate)

by:

Okay so I'm not hating on alpha phi in any way but I am wondering why they were chosen to colonize here instead of a more traditionally southern sorority? For example Alpha Chi Omega and Zeta are both top chapeter at a lot of SEC and Texas schools, and Aphi isn't really top at any of those. I think that maybe colonizing a new chapter would have worked out better if it were a more southern chapter because then the girls would have connections and it could rise and acclimate quicker. I'm not talking about the girls who are in ole miss aphi currently, I mean like why that specific sorority? They're more dominant in the north and I think maybe that's what is hurting them here, not necessarily the other sororities being unwelcoming.

Short answer...sororities are a business. In recent years, smaller national sororities understood they have to heavily market themselves to university Panhellenic councils, and plant new houses, in order to sustain themselves. Alpha Phi and Tri Sigma, to name a few, have been on the forefront of Panhellenic marketing campaigns over the past decade. Ole miss needs more houses and they need chapters willing to put forth the time and money to build up chapters.

Somebody on here said that they were involved with the presentations that the national chapters made to Ole Miss and gave a bit of background on how Aphi came to campus. She said that they were anticipating that it would be ADPi and Zeta (I believe), but everybody was really surprised and impressed with Aphi - they were clearly ready and eager to make the investment, they had alumni support, and they "had done their research" about Ole Miss, so to speak. So they chose ADPi to colonize first and then APhi. If she sees this post she can give more detail.

I think what has hurt them the most is the use of this site for marketing themselves. Bad idea. Their nationals and alumni were over the top on this site and it just was too much of in-your-face.

Time will tell if they will really set themselves apart from the marketing hype and get on with the business of developing a strong sisterhood and service.
