connections

I'm a senior in high school now and i plan on rushing next year. After reading some of these posts on GR it seems like if you don't have any connections you're SOL. What kind of connections is everyone referring to? How can I get these connections? Is connections the only thing they look for?

Connections = friends or really well-connected alumnae, but mostly friends. Friends from high school, camp, church, community activities like NCL, etc. Friends pull for friends.
