we're all better than this! (part one)
by: GammaChi
I had the opportunity to be a Gamma Chi to many of the new young women that wanted to experience rush this year. What I've experienced has caused me to want to make a positive and systemic change in my house and hopefully the Greek system as a whole. I'll start by saying that I'm part of a upper tier sorority that has a long and storied history on campus. I love my sisters and enjoy what we do for each other and the community. However, what I've seen this year really opened my eyes.
There are a lot of trolls on this site so I never taken many of the comments seriously - however, perhaps we should. To see non-fact based statistics and general hatred spread on this site is disgraceful and we should work to eradicate this hatefulness rather than feed and substantiate it.
There's a lot of discussion about how poorly a sorority did or that fact that some of the newer sororities took all of the "rejects" from the top houses. In reality, some of these young ladies never stood a chance. We all claim to have southern hospitality, privilege and charm, yet we quickly dismissed girls this year faster than ever simply because they were form out of State or didn't have the rec from the right alumnus. Many of these girls were never given a real opportunity, simply because they didn't live in the right town or know the right person. It concerns and troubles me that so many quality girls never made it past the first round in many houses, which leads me to my next topic(see part 2)

Everyone says not to read this site because it's not true, but all of this IS rush at Ole Miss. I knew it was bad when I went through, but it's worse seeing what happens on the other side. The OP isn't jealous & neither am I. I am in one of these top houses, but I have no idea how I got here now that I know what they want. I think I slipped through somehow. I'm not thin, I'm not beautiful, but I have great grades. There are three houses who think they're better than the rest, including mine. One has a membership that is mostly from Jackson private school girls who are brainwashed into thinking this is 13th grade & they have to be in this house. They fall in the trap of thinking it's better than the other houses, when that's NOT what this campus thinks or especially frat boys. Instead of trying to better our greek system by giving girls from other towns and states a fair chance, we're cutting them and the cycle continues. Another top house does the same, but has two more towns added to their brew. Cycle continues.House #3 cut some great girls this year who should have been given a chance to get to know, but I will give them credit that they aren't known for a certain hometown or high school. This house likes beautiful people and looks better on campus than the other two. We tell PNM to branch out, but it's hard for them to do when they are expected to want a certain one due to where they're from & sororities won't look at them unless they're from their focus area.
