rush is shooting ole miss in the foot

by:

sorority rush is leaving a field of carnage in its path this year. Everyone knows how competitive rushing at ole miss is. It’s a known fact and girls have to accept that before deciding to rush here. However, what most girls are just now realizing is just how exclusive and discriminatory the process is this year. People come to ole miss expecting welcoming arms and finding a new home. That is not the case this year. The carnage I have seen in these past few rush days is unlike any before. There is a problem that needs to be addressed. You want to rush at ole miss? Better hope you're a legacy x10 or have the money to pay under the table to get into a top house because if you're not a “mississippi girl” you may as well be done. Explain to me how an OOS girl with a 4.0 great resume and fun to talk to can get cut from all but 4 low-mid houses but an average girl from mississippi gets all 8 back. I know she has connections etc, but do you not realize the genuine girls that can bring something new to the table you are missing out on? Top houses are top for a reason, i get that. But do you not realize what you are doing to this place. The cuts this year are like never before. Instead of coming here with welcoming arms, many girls are now realizing ole miss is nothing but who you know, if you're from MS, or if you have the money to bribe you're way into something here. Shockingly growing numbers of girls are already transferring. Numbers i have never seen before.

All because they are realizing how unwelcoming ole miss really is. This new quota system is trying to force these girls to fill out the less-full houses. understandable, but you're kicking yourselves in the ass. More girls than ever are dropping rush before they join the lower houses or just joining to transfer. Maybe these “top tier” houses should stop letting the alumni think they're 19 years old again and make some decisions for yourselves. Try looking at the girl and SHE brings to the table. not her parents, her legacy, her money, or what state she comes from. Maybe if y'all opened your arms to a broader range of women, so many girls wouldn't perceive ole miss as the shallow place you all are making it. Ole Miss is said to have a “competitive rush”. How can it be a fair competition if the game is over before you even rush. Ole Miss rush isn't competitive. It is downright about where you come from and who you know. Want to be apart of a competitive rush where they look at you as a person? Try any other southern school, those are competitive. Ole Miss rush wont give you a chance if you aren't from Mississippi or have strong alumni connections. Are you thinking of attending Ole Miss in the future? Do yourself a favor, don’t. Save yourself the time, money, and heartbreak if you aren't from mississippi. Try going greek at a school that doesn't care if you don't come from the backwards state of mississippi. Its all about whats on the outside here. Rush, you are shooting ole miss in the foot. I hope you know how many great people you're losing.

This isn't just occurring this year. The system has always worked this way. The variable quota system is just making it more obvious than ever before.

Take a deep breath and calm down.

Yes, ole miss sororities are well known to have one of the most competitive recruitments in the nation. No, it is not fair. However, we also have some of the best chapters in the nation right here on our campus.

I am from Texas. When I applied to ole miss I did not know a single girl who was here. I worked hard at finding connections! There was no stone left unturned. I did my research and attended spring parties and met as many girls as I could. I played the "game". Same as everyone else who wanted to land in a top or mid house.

I am a senior this year and we preffed 3 houses the year I went through. I preffed all three top houses. Since then, I have come to realize that every sorority offers something special.

Every year I rush girls from Texas. I introduce them to as many of my friends as possible, I go to bat for them and guess what, they get bids!

Top sororities are not just for Mississippi girls! Over half my top sorority is from oos! We rush top girls from all over the south!

I'm also thinking you are not a PNM, but a mom. I know this because moms always get way more upset than their daughters do.

Your daughter will find her way! She will find her happy place. I promise! If not, then perhaps ole miss wasn't the right choice for her.

For the record UT has just as competitive rush as here. If you didn't attend the right school or summer camp, it is just as brutal. While I'm at it, life is just as unfair as rush

Calm down moms. Rush is always this brutal it just normally doesn't happen until day 2 or 3. You're just seeing it way earlier in the process now! And you/your daughter will still get a bid if they are as great as you describe! Maybe it wasn't a house they felt an instant click with but they will still find that, friends, and all the joys being in a sorority brings. You can yell about the system all you want but it is evolving whether it worked out how you wanted or not. Life's not fair, rush isn't fair, we all move past it and work hard to make whatever sorority we do get a bid to the best it can be.

also, there are tons of mississippi girls who go middle and bottom tier! i'm from a town in mississippi that is very well represented at ole miss, and we have girls in every single sorority! being from mississipi, being in honors college, and having connections DOES NOT guarantee these girls spots in top houses! there just isn't enough room in those three houses for all the amazingly beautiful and talented girls rushing at ole miss. i know it's hard, but i promise that it works out in the end. ole miss has amazing sororities from top to bottom! and if this rush doesn't pan out, try to COB one of the smaller houses in the spring or try next year when you have more connections. good luck!
