rush

I heard today that there are 1,900 girls rushing and at least 500 will be cut... what does it take to be completely cut from rush?

Wrong. Quota is not set before rush starts. It is set the night of pref parties. If 1900 PNM's start rush and 1800 of them attend pref, all 1800 are guaranteed to get a bid IF they maximize their options - ie, list every house whose pref party they attended on their pref card & not suicide.

Now, unfortunately every year their are PNM's who are cut from all houses before pref. 95%+ of these PNM's have bad grades, didn't get rec letters, or have "questionable moral character". Rushing halfway through the first semester has provided PNM's with plenty of chances to demonstrate their character and sadly, many PNM's make stupid decisions that will get them cut. Maybe 5% of pnms who get totally cut just fall through the cracks - good girls who just don't have connections or don't make a big impression during rush.

The majority of girls who don't get bids drop out when they still have party invites left. The may lie and say they were totally cut but it's not true. If you rush here - especially this year with the new quota system- you need to be willing to accept a bid from ALL houses if you really want to be Greek. If you go in with that mindset and have good grades/recs/character, you have nothing to be stressed about!

There is one scenario where a PNM can be cut after pref round even if she doesn't suicide. Technically, in order to "maximize your options" and be guaranteed a bid, a PNM has to rank all 3 houses, but if she was only invited to 1 or 2, she no longer has that immunity from being cut. It would be extremely unfair to require a chapter to take the girl from the bottom of their list instead of girls they ranked higher just because the bottom girl didn't get invited to pref anywhere else. Once a chapter has met quota, they cannot be forced to take anyone else (and with the new system will not be allowed to take quota additions), and they always go in order down their bid list to meet quota.

Example: somehow you only get invited to chi o for pref round and the girl you talk to really doesn't like you, so they vote no on you and you go to the bottom of their bid list. If Chi O's quota is 90, and they pref 350 girls, you won't get a bid unless only 89 girls on their bid list match with them, because they'll go down their list looking for matches starting with number 1 - and ending whenever they get their 90th match (they would probably be around number 150 at that point)

You don't think that chapters will be allowed quota additions in scenarios like this? I get that Chapters are not forced to take quota additions, and understand that girls higher on the list will receive bids before girls lower on the list, but with RFM, everybody is pretty much guaranteed a bid if they maximize their options. If you pref DDD & XO, (we only pref 2 houses) and you are not high enough on either list to receive a bid because they have already met quota, then you will go to the house with the smaller total.

Panhellenic can't for force a sorority to give a bid to someone they don't want, but by inviting someone to pref, you are essentially saying she is already (somewhere) on your bid list. Technically for a sorority to say they don't want to bid somebody, they would have to release her prior to pref.

As far as quota additions go, yes, Panhellenic can force a sorority to take above quota. In the same scenario as above, if somebody prefs ddd and xo and does not receive a bid from either, Panhellenic will ask which sorority will be willing to take her. If neither want quota additions, the house with the lowest total will have to take her, unless they can prove that something substantial happened with the PNM after pref, but before bids are passed out. (Like they found out she lied about grades, or got caught in a compromising situation after pref. \n\n\n\n\n

You are wrong about the girls who pref less than 3 houses. If you maximize your options, you will have a bid even if you only have 1 or 2 pref invites. just be sure and rank both of those. Even if you are at the bottom of their list, you will still have a bid to one of those houses. No one is going to rank you low because they didn't like you on pref night. First of all, no one rushing you on pref night will be an absolute stranger. Second, hometown has a huge say in ranking for bid lists.

If you invite a girl to your house on pref night, then you should be happy to have her at your house bid day. If you don't like someone, cut them before pref night.

I think your estimate number of pnm's is high. You are assuming that all freshman girls will rush. This is not true!

It will probably be closer to 1500 and many will drop out before pref.

Judging by yesterdays meeting I would say close to 1500.
