chances of getting into a sorority with a 2.9 gpa?

by:

having a 2.9 GPA because of awful grades in the past (freshman year), and good grades junior and senior year, will i get cut from most sororities? if not all. junior and senior year I had 3.4's. I am also out of state and will barely have any connections. I can get really good letter of recs, but im really nervous.

Your options will be limited.

Your gpa will get you cut from over half the sororities. Most sororities can't take grade risks according to their by laws.

Your lack of connections will get you cut from a few more.

If you don't already have Recs in, it may be too late for all but two or three sororities to even consider you.

Will they care that my grades have improved?

You really stand very little chance to be honest. If you are not a legacy. They even cut 4.0 GPA if you don't have connections with current actives. I had 4.0 with tons of community service and school activities and was sent to the bottom houses because I was from a small town and out of state is worse and my recs were excellent including state officers.

No they don't look at improving grades. You will get a bid probably but not to the top houses.

Pi Phi, Aopi, Theta, Adpi, and aphi will all take girls in the yellow zone.

not necessarily because i know for a fact that some of them have higher required GPA for their chapter. i am in one of these chapters and we cannot take any of these grade risks unless they are pulled as being a legacy or a standout

I'm in one of the mentioned sororities and the only way we will consider anyone in the yellow zone is if they are a legacy or have extremely strong ties to the sorority.

So what about the girls in the 3.1-3.49 range. What houses will take girls in this range with few connections.

Most sororities will take 3.0's and higher.

What sororities will take yellow zone?

It what you are saying is true, then many, many girls will be cut because of grades.

I always assumed that because the listed chapters had low gpa's that surely they took more grade risks than they claim.

this year we have variable quota. it will be much harder to get into top tier houses, and the "bottom" houses will get better pledge classes than they have had in the past to even out total. as a result of this, i imagine that grade risks will be the first to go from the top and will be cut even harder this year than any other. this rush is supposedly going to be the hardest rush ever at ole miss, and the bottom houses will jump on the good girls that were cut perhaps unfairly from the top houses because of this new quota. as a result, grade risks will have an incredibly hard time. most grade risks that i know from the year when i rushed were cut completely by the second day

If our rush is anything like Mississippi states rush, then we will see more girls drop out than accept bids to bottom houses.

I see no reason why girls would want to join struggling sisterhoods just so they can get a bid. Especially top girls that get released.

Personally, I would rather drop out and try again next year at a different school than get stuck in a sorority filled with girls that don't make me happy. I believe this will be true for most oos girls who have friends in sororities at other schools back home.

Many of us choose a college for more than academics. Colleges do more than prepare us for our careers, they prepare us for life, and the social aspect of fraternities and sororities is one of the many tools that can be helpful.

If youre an athlete, you choose a college based on your sport. A scholar would choose a college based on their academic programs. At ole miss, many of us chose to attend here for the social aspect. If it doesn't provide what we are looking for, it's easy to transfer!

Ole Miss is not a top choice for us OOS students for academic reasons. It is a party school where Greek is awesome. If you are coming from OOS you will need to be a top PNM. You will need a 3.6 or better. You will need an outstanding resume, solid recs, and already have connections within the house. PERIOD! to be considered for most houses at Ole Miss.

It's sad when the only worthy aspect of a school is its "social life." Are you all that socially inept that you can't make friends without spending a couple of grand in an organization?
