philanthropies

I always knew about the social aspects of sororities and thought of them as frivolous. Then somebody told me that chi o, dg, kd, ddd, and phi mu all had chapter gpa's higher than the all Greek average, and much higher than the all university average. It's impressive that girls can attend as many social functions as they do and still make better grades than non-Greeks. !

Then today I saw a post of Facebook saying that tri delt raised $265,700 this past year for St Jude. Is that correct? In one year? If tri delt can raise that kind of money i'm assuming that all the other sororities do the same! Where can I find information on each sororities philanthropy and how much money was raised by each for charity?

I'm coming to see that sorority women are anything but frivolous!

I wasn't going to rush, but now I'm changing my mind.

I don't think most sororities publish that information. Tri delt does because they are all obsessed with St Jude.

Most sororities don't raise anywhere near that amount, but the rumor is that tri delt is full of girls who's daddies are all too happy to fork over money to help their spoiled daughters out.

During rush you will hear all about each sororities philanthropy and how each sorority raises money.

I read the amount raised by Tri Delt was around $187,000. Most groups raise $25,000-$50,000 annually for their philanthropy. To the above person, St. Jude or any other sorority philanthropy is a good thing to obsess about.

To the OP.: there is MUCH more to sorority life than socials. Sure for some members that's all that matters. Sororities encourage and even require a strong GPA with required study hours if your GPA falls below their standard. Sororities encourage involvement in campus organizations and their members are officers in these organizations as well as ASB officers.

Tri delt raised $187,000 two years ago. Last year they set their goal at $200,000 and surpassed their goal by $65,700.

$265,700 is the correct number.

I'm about to sound like a Go Greek brochure or some such thing but here I go. Yes, there is the social aspect to greek life. But the whole "pay for friends and to party" idea that people have about greek life is short sighted and, well, it's just pretty much wrong. Every greek organization takes grades seriously. You don't have the GPA, you can't rush. Your grades slip as an active? Expect to hear about it and have to fix it. As a pledge? You will have study hours. As a result, the greek life GPA tends to be higher than the average GPA on campus. Philanthropy - greek organizations are tied to a specific philanthropy (like St. Judes - tri delt or Ronald McDonald House - adpi), or a specific cause (literacy - piphi, sight - dg). They fundraise and volunteer their time for those efforts and they participate in the other fundraising events for other greek organizations. Service is just a part of the drill and you'll find it within the culture of the greek system. And I'll go further and tout the leadership opportunities. Seriously - there's a ton. On the chapter level or on the panhel level. There's opportunities to go to conventions and leadership seminars and meet other members of your organization from around the country. There's a lot to be learned from being a chapter president or treasurer or whatever, that will help you out somewhere down the line.

And FYI, this is greek life verywhere, not just ole miss. It's NOT just about a party.

I agree, Greek life is amazing. there are tons of opportunities to get involved both inside and outside the Greek community.

However, I disagree with you about opportunities such as president, vp, treasure, etc. and about conventions and such. Each sorority is 400 strong. Only 5 or so will have the opportunities of any sort of significant leadership, and in my sorority, those positions usually go to chapter legacies. Sure we "pretend" to vote on such positions, but much like recruitment, our alumni control officer positions as well. We have 20 or so "officer positions", but all but 3 or 4 are held by chapter legacies. And each officer position answers to an alumni advisor or group of advisors.

Don't mean to be a "negative nelly", but let's keep it real here. Adpi and aphi may be exceptions because they don't have a strong alumni base. If its leadership you are after and want to have a significant voice, stick to the newer sororities, especially if your mom or grandmother didn't attend ole miss.

you raise an interesting point.

If you want to dive into campus, be involved, have leadership opportunities, are you better off being in a chapter like ADPi or Alpha Phi that is still so new? Being part of the early classes who help a chapter grow, make their way on campus, etc. would be a very very different experience than a house that's been here for a long time.

Note I said different. Not better. But different. But that could be what some people want. Just a thought.

I agree. It is one of the benefits of a newer sorority.

Every sorority raises money for great causes! Sororities in general teach us how to raise money. Great skills to learn.

I spent most of my free time in high school coaching a special Olympic swim team. Is there a sorority that has special olympics as their philanthropy?

There's not a sorority with that specific philanthropy at Ole Miss, but you can read about each sorority's philanthropy and see if any of them align with your passions or interests in another way. And during rush, you will hear about each chapter's philanthropy in depth, so that is a good time to find one that resonates with you.
