transfer

by:

Hi! I am planning to transfer to Ole Miss as a sophomore. I am curious about how prominent Greek life is after freshman year? I am not planning on rushing because, quite frankly, I don't think I'd be able to get a bid. (OOS, no connections..) I have absolutely no problem with the Greek system though, and I can see myself being friends with people in sororities because my personality matches girls who are in Greek life. I was wondering how a transfer who is not in a sorority would be accepted around campus?? Does anyone here have friends who are transfers and not in Greek life? Thank you!!!

Honestly, I don't have any friends outside the Greek system other than casual acquaintances from girls I have met in my classes, or girls who are dating friends of my boyfriend.

The Greek community is large and we gravitate towards each other, regardless of which sorority we are in.

That being said, I don't think you should write off rush so quickly. Yes, there are sororities that will be harder for you to get into, but there are also sororities that take lots of transfers! We have two new sororities that need transfers to balance out their class mix.

Don't read too much into all the rankings! Only freshmen obsess over those. Even the newest sororities have great mixes of girls that are easy to fit into.

I will be a senior this year and in my sorority, girls don't drop out. We have girls that transfer schools, or drop out of college in general, but if girls are still attending ole miss, they remain active. In most sororities you can't even live in the house until you are a junior or a senior.

It's not too late to sign up for recruitment. But you will have to work extra hard and fast in finding Recs!

And I would be transferring next fall! So I have time to get recs and everything :) I was also wondering if I have a 4.0 transfer GPA.. will that help? Or is GPA kind of ignored as long as you're passed the minimum?

@OP, it sounds like you should definitely give rush a chance when you get here! you said you could see yourself being friends with girls in Greek life because you have similar personalities, so you could give it a shot!

another thing, if I'm reading your post correctly, you will be transferring as a sophomore next fall, meaning you're entering your freshman year at another school this fall? if that's the case, and the school you're going to this year has greek life, consider rushing and joining a chapter there that's also at ole miss, and that way you can affiliate when you transfer.

if not, just work hard at keeping your GPA up next year because that will help, do some stellar activities and have experiences you can talk about, and working on making connections/getting recs because all of that will help you if you transfer and decide to rush.

Grades are critical. Without really good grades, you better be prepared to be grateful and appreciate ANY invitation that you receive. Few chapters will consider less than 3.0, no matter how cute & funny you might be.
