is iu expanding too quickly?

by: Alpha

If the sororities keep taking more pnms like they did year (and yes pnms you are very fortunate compared to your current sisters!) - I think it closes IU to expansion. Already this year 1 chapter suffered because everyone else took so many more. I know Sigma Kappa is coming, but did Panhel screw up expanding yet again and upping quota too quickly? I feel it should have been one or the other - expansion or raise quota, not both.

I don't know. There were still girls who didn't get bids. I don't know if their rankings in early rounds screwed them over. I know 550 women dropped out this year. This is something to watch for sure.

many pnm choose to drop out when they still have chapters available to them. Not everyone can go to Alpha chapter and women need to realize that sisterhood is more than Greek Ranks. I feel bad for women who are released, but not women who drop when they still have chapters available. Adding an additional chapter isn't going to solve the problem of pnms thinking they must have A or B or they quit.

If all the chapters are going to survive, then they need to allow chapters to decide their own quotas, even if it's less than 50. We saw what happened this year - not everyone got 50 (even top chapters) and one chapter significantly less. That didn't happen last year and recruitment had the about the same number of drops through the process. I guess we will have to see how many women went to pref, maximized and did not get bids to fully answer the question.

Adding SK will give approx 60 more women a bid each year. Not really going to stop the formal recruitment PNM exodus when they get dropped by top chapters.

You know what would stop the mass exodus of drops when girls get lower chapters back? DOn't hype the "top" chapters too much. Making the Third Street houses sounds elite is ridiculous. Pi Phi had a girl embezzle money from the chapter, Alpha Phi was sanctioned for lewd behavior, Kappa tries too hard and Tri Delt...well Tri Delta is orange, overly tanned overly made girls with below average GPAs. Yet solid normal chapters like DG, AXID, Gamma Phi, Theta take all kinds of criticism for not being as good as the other "top" chapters. Then you take nice chapters like AOII, ADPi, SDT, Phi Mu and tell everyone they are irrelevant. Great job ladies. Then below the irrelevant sororities are the unhoused chapters. So half of fixing the tiers problem is for Panhel and IFC to decide the pairs for L5 and HC. Let it be random, then no social status would be attached to it. You get mad at girls who drop, but you're the ones who made them feel like certain chapters aren't worth their time. End of rant.

it did hurt some chapters because DPhiE only got 11 new members...

DPhiE is getting screwed in my opinion by the expansion of Sigma Kappa. Panhel has not given them significant time to get established before bringing on another chapter. They should have waited at least one more year or rethought the 50 quota min.

I know my sorority voted against expansion because that doesn't solve the problem, removing bed quota would solve the current issue.

We voted for it because we wanted to keep taking <50 new members and knew expansion was the only way to make room for more women with that in mind, but then they forced that on us too. Knowing what we know now, we would have voted against it. It's not that we don't want more women in Greek Life, we do, but we want our chapter to remain <150.

That's bull because DPhiE got as much time as the other new sororities did before someone else colonized. You can't blame a new sorority for their weak foundation.
