best rush advice

by: excited pnm!

Hi ladies!
So as you can probably tell us pnm's are pretty nervous. Could you all help me with some advice on how to go into recruitment and come out with the best possible scenario! Like if you were to rush again, what would you wish you knew! I don't mean like pinning chapters against each other, I just want the best experience possible thank you xo!

1. Keep an open mind. I thought I wanted to be in a top tier house, and I ended up liking the middle tiers much better.

2. Don't get your heart set on any particular house. Indiana has one of the most competitive recruitments in the country. I was devastated to only have 4 housed sororities left after the first round (1 top tier, 1 middle tier, and 2 bottom tier). Personally, I was only interested in houses sororities, but that is a personal preference. The 3 unhoused sororities have great qualities. It was just important for me to live in a sorority house. The top tier sorority dropped me after the 2nd round, but I kept the middle tier and 2 bottom tiers the rest of the time. I was very fortunate to pref 3 housed sororities.

3. Be yourself. We can tell when you're being fake.

4. Don't forget to smile!!!

5. Have fun. Seriously, it is a grueling process, but you have to remember to have fun.

6. Breath mints or listerine strips.

Good luck!!

I am really surprised you would say IU has one of the most competitive rushes in the country. Any list I've ever seen has never listed IU as a competitive rush. Most are southern schools. If a school the size of IU has 50-55 girls in a pledge class , they can not have THAT many rushing. Very confused by that statement and just looking for clarification because it just seems you are wanting to 'scare' girls into lower tiers if they want to be greek. Not arguing you, but just curious! Any numbers you can provide(how many girls rush, drop, join) would be helpful! Thanks!

Last year there were around 2,000 girls who registered for recruitment and just over half of them got bids. IU rush is not only the most competitive, but also the most exclusive (because of bed quota, a system that no other school has)

To stats. That's so strange because that's not at all what your website says Very confused, can you put a link to that because what I have found on the IU website says you have about a third of the girls you said. So you are saying you have the same number of girls going through recruitment as Alabama and lead the other SEC schools? Honestly that's impressive and you need to put link-but again-how do you only have 50-55 girls in a pledge class if you have such a large rush? So Confused! No doubt you guys have some of the best recruitment videos...but largest rush? Not lookn like you are even close?Links and we are beliers

wondering about this 'bed quota' that only IU has. does that mean they only open their pledge class to how many 'beds' they have in a house? ehhhh...im sure im wrong..if not-that is why iu greek life is going down the tubes so quickly and frats are fighting to get out-right? who wants to pay that kind of money when the whole system is shrinking? im only guessing that's what it's about?

To those questioning the competitive nature of IU recruitment: You keep saying that IU can't have THAT many pnms participating if new member classes are 50-55 in size. You are wrongfully assuming that (like SEC schools) IU figures quota based on total pnms attending pref divided by number of sororities. IU does not work this way. Traditionally each sorority determined their own quota by the number of spots/beds in the physical house, hence "bed quota". For a long time, most houses even required every member to live in. This is slowly changing, and some upperclassmen may now live out. This year, for the first time ever, Panhellenic is requiring each house to take at least 50. HOWEVER, 50 x total number houses still = significantly less than total pnms attending pref night. Unlike even SEC schools, there will be ALOT of pnms this year who attend 3 pref events, list all 3 on pref card and still wind up bid less. Hope this helps answer your questions.

You don't understand IU's Recruitment. We are the only Panhellenic in the nation that allows our chapters to set their own quotas rather than follow RFM Total quota. Many chapters require their sisters to live in all 3 years. That said, we can not take total quota which would give us pledge class sizes of 80+. Also keep in mind we have 22 national sororities (6+ more than many SEC schools. Some of the more competitive sororities could only fit 120 in their house, so they traditionally took only 30-35 pledges a year. IU is The only school where a smaller pledge class equates to higher tier and larger pledge classes is considered lower. This year Panhellenic has set a minimum quota for all sororities of 50, and some chapters are pissed because they feel they will lose some of their exclusivity. However, it's the right thing to do because we need to open up Greek life to more women and stop releasing so many quality women. Personally, I think we should be required to do total quota, but that won't happen unless we are forced. SEC recruitment is very competitive but many more women are placed in a chapter than at IU. See our Panhellenic website for stats. It's ridiculous.

Just saying- what lists are you looking at? Lol. A simple Google search for most competitive rush and IU is always listed alongside Bama, Ole Miss, etc. it's a different kind of competitiveness though bc we do it to ourselves by limiting the number of bids we give. Some IU sororities purposely want to exclude many women so they can seem more exclusive. Call it the Greek Hunger Games.

You are spot on on what bed quota is and yes we are douchey like that. Most Greeks don't care if others got in because all that matters is they did. This is a big reason Greek life is so hated on this campus by non-Greeks. They Greeks have deemed them "not worthy"

There are your stats. Now you can see why IU rush is so exclusive and competitive. I know it kinda sucks, but this is what makes IU's greek system is so great! :)

I wouldn't say our "difficult" recruitment makes us great. It makes it hard to get in. I think we would be great if we allowed more quality women to be a part of Greek Life like the SEC and if we actually got along and stopped backstabbing each other.

Take a notepad with you to take notes about each sorority. DON'T WRITE DOWN NOTES UNTIL YOU GET TO THE NEXT HOUSE. You don't want the actives to see you writing down notes as soon as you walk out the door.

These notes will come in handy in ranking the middle of the pack. Your favorites and least favorites will stand out, but the middle houses will get a little blurry.

Getting off GreekRank is definitely great advice. But, in case you are still on here and looking for tips, here are some of mine:

1. Take GOOD notes about each chapter, especially during 22 party. It can be pretty hectic in between the rounds, but there is almost always down time. I'd recommend taking notes on memorable things about the chapter (their skit, memorable conversations, what the house looked like, etc.) as well as how you felt there. If you weren't comfortable for whatever reason, write that down. You might think you can remember everything about every chapter, but by the end of 22 party a lot of it will be a blur. Notes will help a lot when you're ranking.

2. Be yourself, but also be positive and happy. When you get your lists back, especially the morning of first invite, a lot of girls are disappointed with the number of houses they got back. When I recruited last year, it was very obvious when a PNM did not want to be there or was upset about her list, and we take note of that. Don't ruin your opportunities at other chapters because your first favorite did not ask you back. Treat every house as if it's your favorite. Smile and act happy to be there.

I have a lot to say so I'll continue on the next post (:

3. Keep and open mind and try not to let the tier system or how your friends and floor mates are ranking affect YOUR opinion. That can be difficult, but try to think for yourself. Whatever chapter you end up in, you'll be living with these girls. Eating meals, hanging out, studying, going out, seeing each other at your worst and your best, everything. You should be able to see yourself doing these things. Don't think about the superficial factors too much, or you might end up really unhappy. The house I ended up in was not necessarily a top favorite during recruitment. However, I felt like I could always be myself and I laughed through every round. Now, I realize there is no chapter I would rather be in.

4. During the skits, videos, and pref ceremonies (all times when you're seated with other PNMS as chapter members stand around the perimeter of the room), pay attention to how the sisters are interacting with each other. It's normal to want to be thinking about yourself, messing with your clothing or looking at the decorations, but seeing how sisters interact with each other is a great indication of the chapter's attitude. Are they smiling, giggling, whispering to each other? Or are they straight-faced, not acknowledging one another, looking like they don't really get along? Everyone is going to treat you like you're royalty as the PNM, but how they treat each other says a lot more.

5. I'm sure you're nervous about your appearance, hair, makeup, outfit, etc. Keep in mind that appearance matters in the sense that we care about PNMs looking put together and taking pride in their appearance. However, flawless makeup and perfect outfits are not something we take into consideration. Sure, it helps you stand out, but the conversations you have with chapter members, your high school and college involvements, GPA, etc. matter SO much more. Of course I can't speak for every chapter, but what makes a PNM really stand out is her attitude and the conversations we have.

Good luck with recruitment! You'll hear "trust the process" a lot and it gets annoying, but it's true. Try to have fun with it! You get to meet tons of new people and hopefully find your home away from home (:

ALL PNM's try to remain Calm when going through recruitment! Don't freak if you get less then half the houses back. It really only takes one and they saw something in YOU......... that's why you got the invite BACK! Plus each house only can take a certain number of women.

I am considering applying to indiana and I really want to be in a sorority Are there any plans to allow more spots in the sororities so that more girls can get bids? It seems much more competitive than other schools even for lower tier houses.

New colony forming Spring 2015 is Sigma Kappa. Indiana is in a league ALL of their own when it comes to recruitment. It is based on the number of beds available in each house. Most house's require to live in house more then one year! Some National Sorority's have mandated to take more then the 50 PNM per house. Plus recruitment starts in the Spring. Grades, Looks and Conversation Matter! Recruitment is NOT for the faint of heart at IU!

Don't pay attention to the tiers. As mentioned above, many many many girls will have their hearts broken and be left without a bid.

Be thankful if you receive a bid, even if it's from the "worst" sorority on campus because there are hundreds of girls who would love to have the spot.
