rushing again

Is it worth the try or are you really better off transfering if you want to be in a sorority?

You'll have better luck rushing as a transfer at any other school. If you didn't get a bid at IU as a freshman, you sure as hell won't get one as a sophomore.

I'm not saying you SHOULD transfer, but thats the cold hard truth. Why would they want you next year if they didnt want you this year? It wasn't an accident that you didn't get a bid. Either move on or find another way to go greek.

I felt I went through with the wrong attitude and didn't prepare like I should have. So I wanted to maybe try again after growing up.

You still shouldn't expect to do better than you did this year. It's very unlikely. I say go for it, but only if you'll be okay with not getting a bid again. If your heart is absolutely set on joining a sorority, you need to either adjust your expectations or try somewhere else.

I would just be happy to have a chapter to be honest. And the only other instate public school would be Purdue. I'm not sure how recruitment is at Purdue for sophmores.

I know girls who get bids as sophomores. The important thing is to be humble, keep the attitude in check, maximize options, and give every house a fair chance.

Make as many sorority friends as you can in the next year. Seriously. That's probably the only advantage that sophomores have; the fact that they know people in houses.
Also get as close to a 4.0 as you can. That will help. Good luck.

I think you should try again next year (and hey some of the unhoused sororities might have informal recruitment this year/next fall) and just be honest with yourself and them about what went wrong. And even if you have a good GPA, get it higher and that will help a lot. However, if you really have your heart set on going Greek, i would say transfer and it will be so much easier to get in.

I don't think you should transfer just to be part of a sorority. Here's my strategy for you: (1) Get your GPA as close to a 4.0 as possible. (2) Work on making conversation with people you don't know to improve social skills. (3) Make friends (not just superficially but actually) with sorority members. (4) Keep your mind open and consider that the unhoused sororities are just as legitimate as the housed ones because in the end it's sisterhood that matters most. (5) Make sure you look put together when going through rush next year.

Always look put together. Participate in class. Be nice to everyone. Sorority recruitment is an all year long thing.

I can't tell you whether or not it's worth it to stick it out or transfer, but I wouldn't bank on getting in next year. If it was me, I'd transfer. I know a lot of other universities organize their greek system so that everyone who goes through recruitment has the potential to get a bid (unless they're flunking out of school and are just a terrible person who no one can stand). ISU isn't nearly as exclusive as IU but it's a good school and they have a greek system that is easier to go through.

Do not transfer!! I am currently in a sorority and will tell you it is over rated. Don't get me wrong, it has been a great experience and I have met some really cool people but living in the house two years in a row sucks. I don't care which house you get in, it is all the same. When you put all kinds of women together in a close proximity you are going to get lots of DRAMA. I have friends who did not get in their freshman year and they decided not to rush sophomore year because they still came to the parties and still are having a blast in college without a sorority. You don't need it.
Also, you can get in as a sophomore. I will let you in a few secrets since this is anonymous. I have several younger friends who came through rush last year and this year. I could not get them into my house. There is nothing wrong with them, it is just luck of the draw. I don't get to pick, We use cards and that is basically my vote. If you get one card from one person in your five minutes of speaking together that is bad you will not get asked back. It sucks. So my friends think it is my fault. When actually, I did everything I could. There are just so many people going through rush. Grades have a little to do with it, appearance is the majority. I hate to say it, and yes it sounds shallow, but it is true. First impression. That is basically all there is to go on. So don't transfer over a sorority. Indiana is a good school.

are you seriously trying to say that you couldn't do more to get your friends into your chapter? before recruitment you could have introduced your friends to your sisters and they could have become friends...then introduce them to more sisters...etc...so that it wouldn't be just first impressions going into it lol

Yes, that is what I am saying. It is luck of the draw when girls go through rush. It does not matter how many girls that I introduce to my friend, if one person does not like my friend she will not get in. I also will never know who gave my friend the bad card. As for first impression, it is first impression if my friends do not get with someone that knows them. My house is huge and I am not close with every person in the house. And don't read that the wrong way either, I like the majority of people in my house but you can't be best friends with 140 girls. You find your group in the house that you are closest to.

Are the cards used in every round as there are so many girls I would think it would be difficult to vote on each one of them? Do only the people who interview them use the cards or does everyone in the chapter have a vote even though you may have no idea who the girl is?

By: Just Learning

by: Yes

Yes the cards are used in every round and only the people who talk to you get to fill out a card. If I know someone going through I can write a card as we'll, but if someone doesn't like them and fills it out bad, that person isn't coming back. The whole house does not vote on each girl. They use the cards.

I'm glad I'm not in your house because our choosing process works differently. This anonymous card system seems like a bad one...no offense to your organization.

Are your GPA and extracurricular activities equally weighted or is the main consideration as to whether you are invited back to the next round the cards?

GPA is figured the first party. If you don't meet the standards you are automatically dropped. As for extracurricular, no one cares. We are more interested if you are going to fit into the chapter or not. If you get in, you are living with the girls who are rushing you.

Thanks for all of your input and honesty. I was dropped by my favorite house after the 3rd round. I felt I had an amazing conversation with the girls who interviewed me and have been trying to figure out what went wrong and why I was not invited back for preference. It sounds from what you said that it could not have been grades or extracurricular by that point and I tried to look my personal best so I am assuming that someone gave me a bad review although i would have never thought that upon leaving. I guess I will just never really know as I came away from my interview excited thinking it had went so well and now am second guessing the reason I wasn't invited back.

Every sorority does membership recruitment differently. Not everyone does this card thing. Recruitment is hard because you're essentially trying to find friends to add to your friend group. That's how I think of it anyway. Just because you had a nice conversation with someone doesn't mean that you want to be their bestie. Does that make sense? I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, but maybe you can try again next year and will have better luck at a different house because...like you said, getting dropped at that point makes it seem as if you just weren't the best fit for that particular chapter as sorry as I am to say that.

By preference night, it really isn't about the cards anymore. Everyone there is liked and is considered a great candidate for the house. At that point there is a A, B, and C list. If you did not get a bid it is not that the house did not like you or want you into the house. You probably were not on the A list. You could have been on the B list. Unfortunately, there was a lot of competition this year. My house is considered higher on the tier system so we did get everyone we wanted. I would go through again. Next year you may know more people. Also, again keep in mind, that if you did go to preference night, that house wanted you, they just couldn't take all the girls at that party. I heard next year there is going to be a university quota.

If you made preference night. That house wanted you, they just could not except everyone due to quota. At that party, our house would be thrilled to give a bid to any girl that goes to that party. We have to put the girls on a A, B and C list. As said we are happy with any of the girls. Unfortunately, this year, there was a lot of competition and we did get almost all of our A list. If you really want to do this, I would rush next year.

Lots of houses do this the same way and I doubt you are a tridelt. Sounds like someone who is trying to stir up controversy. Nice try though and no I am not a tridelt. By the way, all the sororities use cards. When a PMI walks in you hand the card to the person rushing you, when you leave they right notes on your card.

Saying to someone who made pref night that the chapter wanted them is the same as telling someone not admitted off of a college wait list that that college wanted you or someone who didn't get drafted that the NFL wanted them. It's simply not true.

The harsh truth is that the chapter "wanted" the PNM enough to give them an alternate spot if enough of what they considered their better picks didn't want them back.

It's not the same thing as actually being wanted or just being shy of being wanted because no chapter 100% gets everyone they want and so every chapter needs to move down to some of their alternate picks anyway. The rejected girls weren't high enough on the alternate list to get accepted off of it. That's the truth.
