piercings during sorority rush?

by: pnm

Is it a problem to have a nose ring in during rush or should I take it out? I'm kind of nervous because so many girls in sororities seem to be really preppy, but I have a couple piercings and dyed (ombre) hair. Are there houses that accept girls who look a little edgier?

take the piercings out. nothing wrong with them, but it's just not something you want to display during rush. many, many girls in the house also have various facial piercings and they have to take them out too.
hair is fine.

I sweetly and respectfully ask. . .do you want to be a member of an organization where you have to fake who you are to get in? Will you be uncomfortable for the next 3.5 years of college? Just something to think about.

I don't want to fake who I am, I just thought that wanting to be in a sorority would be a more important factor than my nose ring or my industrial and helix piercings. If I take them out, I don't see it as fake, but as being "professional", since I'd take them out for a job interview or something similar. I just wasn't sure if that was something I should do or not.

That's like saying you're not the true you if you change out of sweatpants to go to an interview. You want to make a good first impression, so you dress to fit the occasion. A formal gown may be more appropriate than a pantsuit to a certain event, but that doesn't mean you're not the same person on the inside. Knowing how to dress/behave in different situations is what's important, not having the best clothes, the right color hair, or being perfectly made up. Presentation is a factor in recruitment but, at least for my chapter, it's "do they know how to dress for a certain type of event, do they put effort into their appearance, did they just roll out of bed," not "I can see her tattoo so she's cut."

OP, do what makes YOU feel most confident. If you keep the nose ring in and futz with it the whole time, it will be distracting, but if you wear it and forget to take it out because it's just normal to you, then we likely won't notice either. Just make sure you make yourself look presentable for what you wear, how you style your hair, personal hygiene, etc. And keep in mind Indiana is far less preppy and conservative in style than other state schools like Alabama, where having a facial piercing may be a bigger deal.

I think she meant your whole edgy thing, since you think most sorority girls are preppy. Plenty of preppy girls have piercings and even tattoos.

No teachers at my school have nose piercings. No doctors, lawyers, business leaders, nurses etc. Look around. The lower the education and the lower the salary, the more nose holes. Just telling it like it is.

Everyone responding to this are geeds. I have a nose ring and did fine during rush. Girls who rushed me had nose rings. You’ll fit in with the edgier houses more anyways clearly and they’ll obviously appreciate the nose ring because it fits their vibe. Literally no one takes that into consideration in a negative way unless you look like emo or something. None of the houses here are that “preppy” because being preppy isn’t even “in” anymore, being edgier is. Keep the nose ring it’s not a big deal literally at all.
