are letters of rec needed?
by: recs?Hello - I am an OOS freshman (California) and want to go through Sorority Rush. I know IU rush is competitive because of the numbers, but are letters of rec important? Since IU has a deferred rush, do recs really matter? I have a couple of friends going thru rush at SEC schools and they are spending all summer getting recs. If I need to get recs, when should they be sent in? Is now too early?

You definitely do not need recs here, but it can't hurt. You don't need to stress about it, but if you're are able to get recs then you should. Think of it this way, there's so many girls going through rush, it will help you stand out from other girls. You don't need to send them now,in october you will have a meeting about recruitment and meet your rho gamma so then you can get more information about how to send them in.

If you're really interested in getting letters of rec, go for it. But it really won't help you much and it won't make or break your recruitment experience. It's not going to be your ticket into any house, regardless of tier. Sure, letters of rec can't hurt, but don't waste time or energy getting them. Your personality, grades, appearance, involvement, etc. is much more important.

Like everyone said, recs aren't a huge deal compared to southern schools. However, being from out of state myself, I felt much more secure going through rush knowing that I had done everything I could to put my best foot forward before rush even began. Don't let stressing about getting recs get in the way of you getting a good gpa or having a fun first semester, but if you find you have some free time, definitely try to get a few for the houses you are interested in! Good luck!
