How does pref ranking work

Does the 2 houses you rank as your favorites actually have anything to do with the ones that you get back? I’m confused if that allows them to know I want those houses or if it’s luck of the draw for any of the 6 I had back for sisterhood. If i’m higher up on my bottom ranked bid lists then are those the ones I am going to get? Someone explain pls
