getting into a sorority

by:

Hi guys, I'm from California and I'm attending IU in the fall. I've heard IU is really intense about their greek system and it's hard to get into a sorority. How true this statement in your experience? Am I at a disadvantage since I'm from California and don't know anyone?

yes, girl's rush is really difficult at IU and a lot of girls don't get bids. You aren't at a disadvantage because your from cali, you're at a disadvantage cuz you dont know anyone. A lot of people are from similar chicago suburbs/indy burbs and know people from highschool. It just means you might need to be a little more openminded when it comes to choosing...or just be hot

If you REALLY want a bid, unless you are very attractive (be honest with yourself) I wouldn't try to rush houses such as Zeta, Tridelt, Pi Phi, or Alpha Phi unless you make some serious connections in the house your first semester. Rush for these houses is insanely competitive and not knowing anybody/not being a legacy doesn't help you at all. You can go for it but I would focus my rush on less competitive houses.

Thank you for the advice!

I personally went through rush not knowing anyone and had an awesome experience. Just treat every house the same and talk--- thats a huge part of it!

dont let this advice completely discourage you though, you can still rush these houses with as good a chance as anyone (obviously i dont know you, that might not actually be the case, sorry if thats harsh)...just go in confidently and with an open mind. it will become so cliche but being open minded IS KEY so that if a house you really liked drops you, you arent completely heart broken that you drop rush altogether.

Just get recs, put your best foot forward, and do your best. Accept ANY bid that is given to you because they're all great houses and rush here is extremely competitive and no matter what people say on this website all the houses are fun and you'll find girls to bond with.

Thank you so much, I was really starting to get worried!

To get a bid ANYWHERE. IU is the toughest rush in the country. You must be open to every chapter, even the unhoused ones. Also be aware that Sigma Kappa is recolonizing next year.

You're an idiot. IU is not the toughest rush in the country. Not even a little. Alabama is, and then Ole Miss, then probably every other southern school. Then in the midwest it's definitely Miami of Ohio, and then probably OSU or IU.

No you're the idiot. IU is considered one of the toughest rushes in the country because unlike Bama, Ole Miss, Georgia, you can go to preference and NOT receive a bid. All other campuses BUT IU use the quota total system in which quota is determined by Panhel after the number of invitations to preference have been issued. Then the number of girls going to pref is divided by the number of chapters: if there 1000 girls going to pref and 10 chapters then quota is 100.

Before you call someone an idiot please make sure you know your facts because you are clueless. Miami of Ohio has a great Greek system but isn't considered competitive at all, neither is Ohio State. Girls who don't get bids there are the ones who drop out because they think they are too good to be in certain houses. In fact, OSU probably has one of the easiest rushes in the Big Ten.

IU's rush isn't the toughest rush in the country. Each sorority takes the girls that fit as do fraternities with guys. There are only so many girls and guys that fit the bill for each, quota or no quota.

Sigma Kappa is not coming until the following year 2015-2016 and they will have a house the following year. I was present at their presentation.

I went in to rush not knowing anyone and it was totally fine. As long as you can hold a memorable conversation, you'll be good to go. I rushed this spring and was surprised by how well it worked out. Just be personable and optimistic.

IU Rush is by far one of the toughest in the nation. Check out the New York Times article - google NYTimes Sorority Rush IU. It ran July 22, 2012. More than 50% of the girls do NOT get a bid bc there aren't enough beds. That's 1 of every 2 girls rushing. Make sure you have a good support system when you don't get the bid.

www.nytimes.com/2012/07/22/education/edlife/prepping-stud ents-for-sorority-rush.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

'Indiana is reputed to have one of the toughest rushes. Parents have complained on the Sorority Parents blog, operated by the National Panhellenic Conference, that space is too limited. Last year, a little more than half of the 1,718 women at Indiana who registered for recruitment joined a sorority; about 800 either didn’t continue or did not receive a bid. Possible reasons, say university officials: inadequate grades, student dissatisfaction with the chapters that chose them and vice versa, or not enough spaces.'

I'm also from California, and last year I didn't know anyone. Honestly don't worry too much about tiers and only concern yourself with the girls. I found girls I like, and I guess I'm lucky because they chose me too, but if you don't get called back to a certain house it's not the end of the world. Just don't get too fed up on tiers, it's the girls you're actually going to be spending time with

greek life is really intense here, but you're not at a disadvantage as long as you're above average looking, genuine and kind, and easy to talk to.
Let your personality do the work and you'll do great! :)

PLUS your rho gamma will help you along the way. Don't get attached to sites like this. They'll ruin your views of a lot of great and wonderful chapters!
