getting into a sorority
by: CA_2_IUHi guys, I'm from California and I'm attending IU in the fall. I've heard IU is really intense about their greek system and it's hard to get into a sorority. How true this statement in your experience? Am I at a disadvantage since I'm from California and don't know anyone?

yes, girl's rush is really difficult at IU and a lot of girls don't get bids. You aren't at a disadvantage because your from cali, you're at a disadvantage cuz you dont know anyone. A lot of people are from similar chicago suburbs/indy burbs and know people from highschool. It just means you might need to be a little more openminded when it comes to choosing...or just be hot

If you REALLY want a bid, unless you are very attractive (be honest with yourself) I wouldn't try to rush houses such as Zeta, Tridelt, Pi Phi, or Alpha Phi unless you make some serious connections in the house your first semester. Rush for these houses is insanely competitive and not knowing anybody/not being a legacy doesn't help you at all. You can go for it but I would focus my rush on less competitive houses.

Just get recs, put your best foot forward, and do your best. Accept ANY bid that is given to you because they're all great houses and rush here is extremely competitive and no matter what people say on this website all the houses are fun and you'll find girls to bond with.

IU Rush is by far one of the toughest in the nation. Check out the New York Times article - google NYTimes Sorority Rush IU. It ran July 22, 2012. More than 50% of the girls do NOT get a bid bc there aren't enough beds. That's 1 of every 2 girls rushing. Make sure you have a good support system when you don't get the bid.

'Indiana is reputed to have one of the toughest rushes. Parents have complained on the Sorority Parents blog, operated by the National Panhellenic Conference, that space is too limited. Last year, a little more than half of the 1,718 women at Indiana who registered for recruitment joined a sorority; about 800 either didn’t continue or did not receive a bid. Possible reasons, say university officials: inadequate grades, student dissatisfaction with the chapters that chose them and vice versa, or not enough spaces.'

I'm also from California, and last year I didn't know anyone. Honestly don't worry too much about tiers and only concern yourself with the girls. I found girls I like, and I guess I'm lucky because they chose me too, but if you don't get called back to a certain house it's not the end of the world. Just don't get too fed up on tiers, it's the girls you're actually going to be spending time with

greek life is really intense here, but you're not at a disadvantage as long as you're above average looking, genuine and kind, and easy to talk to.
Let your personality do the work and you'll do great! :)
PLUS your rho gamma will help you along the way. Don't get attached to sites like this. They'll ruin your views of a lot of great and wonderful chapters!
