top tier question
by: Top Tier qwhat makes a top tier sorority (such as alpha phi and pi phi) want girls, what are they looking for in the girls they recruit? please don’t bash on me as i am just genuinely curious. i plan to go into rush completely open minded but would like to know all the hype surrounding such a small percentile of greek life. (600 girls out of like 15,000)

Honestly, there are hundreds of girls that are "model thin and fifthly rich" that didn't get into top tier houses. You have to represent the type of girl those houses are looking for. Some are looking for cool or edgy girls, some are looking for sweet and funny girls. They want to find people that they can see themselves living with, people that they can relate to and get along with. I'm not going to lie, looks and wieght are going to play a part. All of these things matter to every chapter not just top tiers, but each chapter cares about different aspects of a girls looks/personality to varying degrees. Just do your best to present the best version of your self and your personality and you will have the best chance of getting a chapter that is best for you.

Here it is. Before bids go out sororities put out a list where each girl is numbered 1-200 (not sure on the exact number). It is very rare that a sorority gets their top 1-55 girls, so if say #20 on their list chooses a different sorority then everyone on the list moves up and #56 now gets a bid.
So, for most sororities it is a big mix of girls who were of the original 55 and girls who would have been dropped but ended up getting bids. For top tier sororities the rates of girls picking a different house over them are very very few. This is why Pi Phi, Aphi, and ChiO have a very specific type and very few randoms mixed in.
The exclusivity is probably the number one thing that makes these top houses so prestigious. Pi Phi had a 99.9% return rate before 2party, Aphi had an 89% return rate after 22 party, not sure about Chi O but they were probably about the same return rate as Pi Phi.

The fact that they have a strong national/ historical presence definitely doesn’t hurt their tier. Talking to moms I know that were in IU Greek life, tiers haven’t changed much in the past 25 years, especially for sororities because very few get kicked off. Third street was considered “elite” then pretty much like it is now. Aphi has a ton of chapters on large campuses, and is considered to be a high tier on most of the ones I’ve seen.

I know tons of gorgeous women in middle and bottom tier chapters. There’s not much that can get someone a guaranteed bid at a top tier chapter here. Unless you’re looking at this and you have over 10k Instagram followers or a biological sister in a top tier house no matter how pretty or rich or cool you are there’s no such thing as a guaranteed bid except for in those two cases and even for those people they still have to make grades. It’s more about who you know in the house and who you happen to talk to during 22 party. You can pray you’ll get lucky and the person or people you talk to will love you and want to invite you back and it might happen but it’s more likely that if you don’t know anyone closely in a top tier house that you won’t get invited back more than once or at all because it’s not often that you have such an incredible 10 minute small talk convo that you’re instantly obsessed with someone. If you keep an open mind and focus on the positives of what houses are inviting you back then you will love whatever sorority you’re in. If you go in obsessed with getting top or top middle you’re setting yourself up to be disappointed with the houses that do want you back. Every single house has pros and cons so keep that in mind throughout your first semester while you’re meeting members of all our different sororities and especially throughout rush when getting your lists back!
