by: UghWhy can’t greek life go back to the way it used to be? No absurd rules, IFC narcs, fraternity witch hunts, sororities getting in trouble for nothing. Taaka flowing everywhere. I know which one I’d choose.

Fraternities should just confiscate the phones of girls who want to come to their parties. If you want in, give up your phone. Amazon sells lock boxes for the them. It would make things way safer in general. And yes, there are certain chapters notorious for being on their phones too much. Looking at you Third Street.

Okay I’m all about people having fun at parties and Greek life not getting ruined but frats definitely shouldn’t confiscate sorority girls phones at parties like that’s literally insane and super unsafe. Either don’t do things that will get you kicked off or stop inviting the girls over that record everything you do

Sorority girls cannot stay off their phones. What brought ATO down finally? The video of the strippers they had over with the vodka bottles in the background. How did DZ and ZBT get caught? Snapchats sent by DZ members. How did ZTA and Pi Kapps get nailed? ZTA social media posts. There you have it.
How is being without a cell phone dangerous at a party with your sisters?? There were no cell phones when our parents were in college and none of them had serious incidents, so that argument doesn't hold water. If your sisters are watching out for each other then they don't need cell phones. However, the fraternities have reason to want to ban cell phones. They could just buy cell phone scramblers, wouldn't be the worse investment.

Frats have always been insane. When my dad was in a frat in the 70s they did crazy things, and both of my brothers were in an IU top frat in the early 2000s and had insane hazing that’s nothing like today. It’s all about the cell phones. It’s not even about taking them away. Frats and sororities should emphasize that if you do something stupid like taking a video you’ll be sent to standards. My house is so strict about social media and group messages that if you even get caught scteenshotting something you get in trouble. People just need to chill with snapchat during parties. If you know you probs shouldn’t be filming it, then don’t film it.

Greek life at IU isn’t what it used to be for multiple reasons.
First off, it’s the IU administration. After seeing what went down at FSU, PSU, LSU & up the road at BSU (among other universities/colleges), they decided to follow suit in hopes that Greek life at Bloomington would change for the better. If anyone working in IU’s administration is a member of a Greek organization, they need to keep in mind that Greek life back in their day is not how Greek life is now.
Second, it comes down to shared responsibility: the good/more reputable men in IU’s Greek community not doing something to/calling out those fraternity members who are engaged in hazing, untoward behavior, acting disrespectful/inappropriately to women & perpetuating the stereotypes which others have about Greek life. If more fraternity men do something the very instant that they see something wrong, we’d have far fewer issues to deal with.
Last but not least, it’s about cellphones. If people are doing sketchy stuff, DO NOT put it on Snapchat or record it. That’s what caused ATO to get shut down almost three years ago. Whatever you film can also incriminate you as well, so don’t film something which you know is inappropriate.

Exactly. As our president says, Greek life was doing the same things 20 years ago, just no one recorded it. Just need to teach some idiots to put away their camera on their phone and enjoy a freaking party. Also, stop ratting on other houses. You may think getting a house you hate in trouble makes you look good or feel cool, but it just makes the rest of IU greek life look bad.
