question about sorority quotas

by:

Does IU not use Quota according to NPC rules? I keep seeing on here that the number of new members is limited every year because houses don't want to take over 50. Does that mean that you don't determine Quota at Pref? Or is this just bad greekrank info. So confused.

What makes IU's recruitment the most competitive in the nation is our use of bed quota meaning each house only hands out as many bids as they will have empty beds in the fall and each house has a 1 or two year live in requirement (for most its two year). Everyone has to give at least 55 bids or face consequences from pha but with 2000~ signing up for rush and 22 houses there are only 1,210 bids up for grabs that means literally hundreds of women don't get bids every year even considering the amount of girls who signed up but never started rush for various reasons.

There is no longer a bed quota. A quota is set based on # left at prefs. But, some chapters accept quota additions, meaning they can take more than quota. Every house that met quota last year had over 50 new members. The reason that so many drop is because they don't get invited back to their top couple of choices and think they are "too good" for the invites they have back.

Thanks. So IU recruitment is regular NPC recruitment with girls not getting bids by their own choice. Makes a lot more sense now.

We don't operate on bed quota as long as 600-800 girls decide to drop throughout the process. If all those women decided to see rush through and take a bid from anywhere there would still be hundreds of girls not placed many houses opt out of quota addition because they are allowed to so why would they take women they don't want. Either way virtually no one takes more than 60 unless they're really hurting for members so there are hundreds of women who can't possibly get a bid yes the process is much better than when all the top houses thought it was cool to take only 35 girls but we still have a long way to go when nearly half of women who sign up don't receive a bid

That is a weird comment about not taking quota addition. Quota additions can only go to girls who attend your pref, which means they are low on your bid list but they are on your bid list nonetheless. That does not make them women you don't want; if they weren't wanted they would be cut before pref. If a PNM ranks all houses where she preffed she is guaranteed a bid at one of them, and that may mean as a quota addition. If she doesn't rank all houses she is not eligible to be a quota addition at all and is not guaranteed a bid from the one or two she ranked.

NPC nationally is going to two prefs across the board. IU will not be implementing this yet. Statistics show that most PNM's get their first or second choice and are more likely to drop if they get their third choice, so it makes sense by the numbers to eliminate a third choice altogether. Also, IU Panhellenic does not do a great job of making PNM's understand that their ranking of houses means very little. Just because you rank your favorite 16 or 9 or 3 houses, that doesn't mean that's what you get back. The houses do the choosing and your top ranked houses may not ask you back so you go back somewhere you thought you 'dropped.' Your rankings only come into play if you are lucky enough to be on more houses' lists than you can go back to, so only then your rankings are used. "PNM's will rank their favorite chapters" is a pretty misleading setup.

If you happen to get lucky and attend pref at two different houses that have both opted in for quota additions then yes you'll definitely get a bid at one of them but chapters do not disclose whether or not they take quota additions to pnms or anyone for that matter. Chapters at IU are NOT required to take quota additions so many do not. Before two years ago quota additions at IU were not a thing at all. Until all chapters at IU are required to take quota additions no one is guaranteed a bid
