as a pnm

My little sister is looking at Indiana being OOS from the South. I love being in greek life at my school but for many OOS students going through rush, it can be really hard to get a bid in a top house without having legacy, camp and high school connections. She doesn't really know anyone and doesn't know wht to expect compared to what I've told her on the other side.

How is the rush process here and how does it compare to formal rush like other schools like UVA/UT/SMU/Vanderbilt?

UVA and Vandy have cake recruitments. UT and SMU are all about connections: summer camps, high school, family friends, etc.

The toughest southern recruitments are Mizzou, Alabama and Ole Miss. IU is on par with those for a variety of different reasons. Girls drop at al of these because they don't "feel a connection" to the chapters they have left, which is recruitment speak for I feel like I am too good for the chapters I have left. IU doesn't use rec letters like Alabama and Ole Miss do.

If IU doesn’t use rev letters like those schools and doesn’t really use connections while looking at girls, how does it work then?

As an older sister I’m obviously a little biased but she’s super sweet and pretty but I’m not sure how I could help her, if at all. She would have three legacy connections (including a current sitting sister in a top house at her school) besides being in business honors at Kelley.

I’m from California and rush around me is pretty chill compared to the south I think. If IU is like those schools that don’t care about letter or connections, what do they look for?

Okay curious keep your POV together, your post are starting to sound fictitous 😍 Really a "sitting" sibling in IU and you don't know how it ends up?

Yeah, this is definitely fictitious. She doesn't know what a 'sitting sister' really is. And rec letters don't help anyone get a bid anywhere, they are a requirement from nationals for the chapters so it's easier to offer bids to PNM's who supply recs so the girls who don't usually get dropped unless they are stellar PNM's.

Sort of. There are schools where if you don't have a recommendation for each house then you will get immediately dropped by each house.

haha chill - if she went to my school, she’d have a sitting sis. Obviously I’m not at IU so I’m just legacy but I’m in what most consider the one of the top three houses at my school plus another three houses she would have legacy in.

I want to help prepare her for what to expect as much as I can but my rush vs hers seems to be two different worlds.

Clearly IU has a ways to go in satisfying the population clamoring for a sorority bid, but IU offers students so much in the way of activities that a student need not look far for lively friendship and worthy activity.

Rush at IU is a lot more relaxed. I was OOS and didn’t know anyone at IU coming in. You meet people a lot and every freshman goes to frats. When I rushed I had a good experience and got back a lot of good houses and ended up in an upper middle tier by just rushing without connections. I know lots of people who were OOS without knkwing people and got into top tiers. But tier also isn’t as big of a deal especially because there’s a lot of chapters. Some houses care, but most just pair with a wide variety.

Rush here is long and emotionally draining especially when nearly every freshman goes in wanting a top tier house and each house only takes 55 girls. But the positive side to that is their are plenty of quality women in every single house. If she's smart she won't drop just bc she's headed to a bottom tier chapter. If she isn't she might have to be a geed

In a "top" house here and am out of state. Last year I actually had an easier rush than my Indiana/Chicago friends even tho they seemed to know a girl in every house. Recruitment and ranking work differently for each chapter, but it is almost completely based off of personality and how well a girl gets a long with the 3-4 girls who rushed her that round. There are a couple of girls that I knew and they were all dropped even when I tried to intervene. On the other hand, all girls who had a bad reputation from home or had been mean/narcissistic/shallow enough for a girl to say something were dropped. If anything knowing people does a lot more harm than good!

^ hate to say it but it's a lot easier to make a case against someone than a case for someone when making cuts. Rush here is more about luck than anything else which is why you'll see a handful of the insta famous popular freshman girls join bottom tier houses or drop because they thought they were too cool to join a bottom tier house. As long as you go all the way through rush you will get a bid from SOMEWHERE but for most people it won't be their favorite house from 22 party or the house or houses they convinced themselves were the only houses good enough for them months before rush even began. Basically if you're a pnm as long as you don't go through rush thinking you're too cool for 10+ houses you will get a bid somewhere and be happy there because there will be people you're obsessed with and people you're not so fond of in literally any of the 22 houses. Rush is so competitive here that every single house is genuinely a solid choice

THIS. This is why rush at Indiana is so hard compared to other schools. There are no bonus points for recommendations/who you know/GPA/legacy. Sororities here just do not care about that. It literally just has to do with personality and nothing more. There are almost 2,000 girls who go through rush and each sorority only needs 50 of their "type." Sororities can afford to be picky but the higher the tier the more exclusive they get. What are the odds that you, out of 1,700, are exactly the kind of girl they want?

Greek life is dying here and there are 2 bars. Tailgate fields? Dead. One quad a week. Almost impossible to get in to a party now unless you're in the registered pair or know someone to put you on the guest list- aka good luck if you're not in Greek life. Restaurants who serve underage are getting their liquor licenses taken left and right. Tell her to go somewhere else.

Sorry Greek life is not dying @IU. It's just becoming tighter. With loss of few frats and one soriority, placement for ONE PNM becomes that more scrutinize.
