Hm is wrong. 55 is not a cap, it's a minimum that each sorority must take. Since there is no set campus total (total = the max amount of girls in a sorority) if a sorority wanted to take twice or three times that, it's their prerogative. Most schools use a quota system which is basically # of pnms divided by number of sororities, no matter how many pnms there are. IU uses bed rush which limited the amount of women to the space available in the house. The smaller sizes are seen as more elite.

Also IU is far from the only school with a tier problem, and people dropping recruitment or even leaving school if they don't get the "top" sorority they want.

Actually several if not all houses are not allowed to take over a certain number of pledges. They cannot take 2-3x the pledge class because it is considered an unfair advantage to the house. Houses must take atleast 55 but usually can't take over a certain number as well.

Just think about it. Using the numbers from last year: quota of 54 (dropped from 55 due to dropouts), more if they set quota higher, ASA and TPA slightly less, DPhiE even fewer (you can search for the numbers-someone had a thread going around bid day). Around 1700 started recruitment, around 1300 attended bid matching, with around 1200 accepting bids (some rejected their bids, some didn't receive one). If you use quota and the number of PNMs at bid matching, that gives a 4% chance of joining ANY chapter.

Bottom line: IU is competitive because of the small PC sizes and you have a low chance of getting a bid to any particular chapter. Odds are, if you maximize your options and don't single intentional preference (suicide bid) you will get a bid somewhere-likely not your first choice, but somewhere. The power sits with the sororities when it comes to IU recruitment.

True, the power of choice rests maximally with the sororities. After the Open House round, they invite you. You decide if you will accept their invitation. If you have fewer invites than openings in your schedule, you MUST accept ALL your invites or your chance of a bid lowers substantially. This is what NPC sororities define as having an open mind.

Not all women will receive invites to the maximum of open placements on their schedule. If the schedule says you may attend 8 parties and you have 5 invites, you MUST maximize your options and accept all 5 invites or you may not be bid. If, on the other hand, you are very very lucky and receive 10 invites and your schedule says you may attend 8 parties, you have the pleasure of declining 2 invitations.

Pi Phi took 54 last year. Out of 1700 who started. That's not much of a chance, so don't count on it. The largest pledge class was like 63 so you really don't have much of a chance ANYWHERE. People need to understand this.

Some houses are really fighting to get you to want them. Pi phi is the house to beat and cuts huge amounts of girls each round. There are way more girls that want Pi Phi then Pi Phi wants which means Pi Phi can afford to be super picky during rush. Every time you are invited back for a round that is a huge compliment.

It's really hard to get a bid from any house in general (except for off campus they can't cut you). It's even harder to get a bid from a top tier house. It's even hard to get a big from the TOP top tier house.

Pi phi isn't just picky it is also the pickiest of the top tier houses so last year even if you were getting a bid back from aphi or tri delt chances were you didn't get one back from pi phi. This year's rush is going to be even more competitive because now that tri delt is gone Pi Phi can afford to be even pickier

just look on greek rank. Obviously pi phi is the top house and knows it. They also know that everyone rushing knows that too. Even if you're not in to that and you dropped them just based on how selective it is the chances still would have been that they would have dropped you eventually.

Actually, the rule is the chapter can only make minimal GPA and extremely rude PNM cuts up until bid night for the first 5 years in order to obtain RFM data. After 5 years, they can cut whoever based on the previous 5 years' RFM data. Last year was TPA's first year cutting, ASA starts this year. DPhiE starts in 2020.

No, what needs to happen is a "minimum quota" needs not to exist. Quota needs to be number of girls at pref divided by number of sororities, period. And a fixed total needs to be set that is the same for ALL groups. This is how every other school does it.
