the tier system at iu

by: GR

I want to start off saying I support the tier system because it's indicative of life. Working at Goldman Sachs is a lot different than working at your local Charles Schuab branch. Same thing with Condé Nast and your local town magazine. There's a pecking order in life, a "tier system" based on prestige and wealth. The more advantageous rise to the top because they want that lifestyle. Those who are more relaxed pick roles that are more suited to them.

That being said, Tier systems are constructs. They do not exist in real life, there is no totem pole on campus that has every fraternity and sorority etched into the wood on top of each other.

I wish that the tier system here at IU remains but it would be less prominent. I know many girls in lower tiered sororities who feel like they constantly have something to prove to the girls in higher tiered chapters. The Greek System should be about instilling confidence in young adults when they are the most vulnerable. Greeks should challenge each other to aspire to be their best academically, physically and emotionally. We shouldn't be putting down each other in order to boost ourselves up.

Social media and this website has brought too much prominence to the tier system. So much so it's turning former friends into rivals and greek system into a game of one-upmanship. Organizations consider "pairing down" a travesty rather than an opportunity. We're better than this, time to give each other an honest chance to shine.
