really iu?

by: huh

I've heard a lot of rumors going around that many sororities do not let their less attractive sisters recruit. These sisters are in the house but are kept in the basement or in their bedrooms.

Is it just me or does this reflect terribly on IU Greek Life? I get that sororities want to recruit the right kind of girls for their chapter (looks, academics, extra circulars, combination of all of the above) but to segregate current sisters away from the recruits is beyond comprehensible. It's petty, mean, some might interpret it as illegal (not me, but I know some social justice lawyers might think otherwise), and frankly immoral.

I'm in a fraternity, and we have never once considered banning brothers from attending rush events because they might sway a rush elsewhere. We've had instances of high quality rushes coming to our events and one brother makes an off-color remark or does something dumb, and the rush goes elsewhere. That's all part of the process. Pretty sure every fraternity experiences this at least once during rush. We let the brother know so he doesn't make the same mistake again.

If I knew a sorority was keeping less attractive girls away from the recruits that would be an immediate red flag for me. I cannot even imagine being pressured into the kind of situations that girls are put in when they join a sorority. I know many girls who have eating disorders and other issues because they have to conform to their sorority's minimum beauty standards.

I'm in a sorority and we would never ever hide someone from the recruiting process. It's usually the top tier ones that do this and it's disgusting. Aphi I'm looking at you.

THIS WAS WRITTEN BY THE SAME PERSON MINUTES APART. stop singling out chapters by trying to make certain sororities seem shallower than they are. There's too many pnms rushing for any chapter to be able to afford taking girls off the floor. Pnms are getting double, a few even triple rushed ( not that that's means anything). Why would any house risk hiding sisters when we need all hands on deck???

I wrote that comment and I'm not the OP and everyone needs to know that this is happening and it doesn't promote sisterhood at all. If you're considered too "big" to be in a chapter, I wouldn't call that a good sisterhood. Most middle and lower tier sororities don't hide anyone either.

Sounds like you protest too much. Everyone knows there are chapters that hide the girls who are too big to be in their chapter (top tier) or the socially awkward girls (middle and lower tier). It happens, wake up.

The Honest truth is is that ALL members participate in recruitment Period!! All members no matter what!!

Girls volunteer and choose to play different roles for their own individual reasons. They choose!!

I have lots of friends in many different chapters and absolutely NO chapter tells members which jobs to do.
