greek life - meta conversation

by: Greek Spartan

I've been a brother at a lower-middle tier house for about 3 years now, so keep in mind that the rest of this post is probably from the point of view of somebody that doesn't have the most breadth in experience as a lot of people that come on GreekRank. However, I've been disillusioned for some time now with the hostility between top tier houses trying to compete to be the best, people bashing lower tier sororities, and a general lack of kinship in a community that should be doing its best to promote the image of Greek Life as a whole.

I'm not saying that we need to all get together have some hippy-dippy bonding event with everybody that's in a fraternity or sorority. I do think, though, that a reflection on what it means to be involved in your respective organizations is a responsibility that's been neglected for far too long. Greek Life doesn't do too much to support a lot of the claims that it's the best thing that a Michigan State student can do with their time. We're too busy fighting about who the best houses are, securing fraternity/sorority pairings, and excluding as many people as possible. How is the rest of the MSU community going to feel even marginally welcome into a community that seems to thrive on tearing itself apart. We're not like Greek Life in the South where half of the student population is affiliated. We can hardly hold down double digits when it comes to the proportion of the student population that's involved in our respective organizations.

It just seems pretty apparent to me that, if we want to be the best organizations that we can be, we have to start by opening the doors a little wider to the other 90% of students that attend the same classes, sporting events, and campus activities that we do. I apologize if this falls of deaf ears, but feedback and discussion would be greatly appreciated.

What are you suggesting? We don't need to have more transparency, we need to not be so transparent about what we do behind closed doors and not be retarded in general.

Thank you. Greek rank has gotten so hostile lately, it's sad to see. Especially with fall recruitment coming up, it'd be nice to start promoting Greek life as a whole rather than tearing each other down. I know if I saw the recent posts as an incoming freshman it would scare me right away from joining any of the Greek organizations on campus. Thank you for this reminder.

Don't worry. One of the fraternities (I'm in) is in the process of planning a huge awesome event that will bring all of Greek life together as one. Just watch.

There simply are too many fraternities for the system to work. MSU Greek life is a sausage fest.
