sorority legacies

by:

So I was wondering if any of the sororities are required to take legacies or what the legacy policy is.

Legacies are important for some sororities but don't matter at all for others

I’m pretty sure no houses are required to take legacies, but it might get you invited back to that house an extra round vs if you were not. The whole point of Panhellenic life/rush is to find out where you fit best. I don’t know any sorority who would mandate that legacies have to be given a bid as the chapter that your mom/sister was in might be vastly different than on one at the school you’re rushing. Sometimes the chapter at the same school changes, too.

Doesn’t really matter. The only time is if you have a sister who is a current active or very recent graduate. Maybe if a house is torn between two girls and one is a legacy they may get the edge. Every year you will have some mom/sister/pnm etc... shaming houses for not taking a legacy. There is no guarantee. Girls aren’t expected to rank their legacy house as their top choice and houses aren’t expected to rank legacy pnms at the top of their invite list.

I do know for my sorority (and I think this is true for some others) that if a legacy is invited to pref, she is automatically placed at the top of the bid list, meaning she is guaranteed a bid.

This is true, however, you have to make it to pref for it to matter and there are no “rules” about the earlier rounds.
